NEIGHBORHOOD ETIQUETTE: "Dos and Don't".
Prior to delving into the topic, its essential to define some key terms. According to Oxford dictionary definition:
Neighborhood: A district or an area of a town; the people who live there.
Etiquette: A formal rule of correct or polite behavior in a society etc.
So, Neighbourhood etiquette: refer to unwritten rules and guidelines for behavior that help create a harmonious living environment among neighbors.
Living with people from different background and culture in the same neighborhood is a thing of joy and wonderful experience but it has it negative and positive effect most especially when it comes to tolerating one another's behavior and attitude. So it required a lot of effort to ensure that peace and harmony is maintain. Been a good, caring, loving and well behave neighbor will really create a good, friendly and conducive environment for living and with time a peaceful community will be establish.
I remember during my early days as undergraduate in 2018 we most at times have issues in my lodge (Neighborhood) because we lack understanding and having bad behavior toward each other, some dosen't keep their yard clean and they don't maintain boundaries and that has done more harm than good in our neighborhood just because neighborhood etiquette was not well understood and practice.
When neighbors practice peaceful coexistence it lead to: increased sense of safety, improved mental health and well being, build more pleasant living environment which will bring about positive impacts that will be pass down to the next generation.
To maintain good neighborhood etiquette to bring peace and harmony you must; understand your neighbors, respect cultural and individual difference, be friendly and approachable, offer help when needed engage in some activities,address issues promptly and always love your neighbour as your self by doing so you will live in peace and harmony with your neighbors.
To maintain Neighborhood etiquette for harmonious living here are some dos and Don't you need to take note if and practice.
Dos:
- Set and respect boundaries: always have it in mind that everyone needs privacy, try as much as you can not to enter their yard without permission nor misusing their properties.
- Be clean: always keep your yard and properties clean. There's this saying that; cleanliness is next to Godliness.
- Be considerate: always consider your neighbors first before self, avoid things that will affect/disturb your neighbors peace like noise and loud music/gatherings most especially at their quite time and at night.
- Assist your neighbors with some task once in a while
- Address issues with your neighbors politely and act maturely.
Don't
The don't is directly the opposite of the Dos mentioned above but here are few outlined below:
- Don't be dirty/liter:avoid throwing debris on neighbor yard or properties
- Avoid engaging too much in your neighbors personal life
- Don't ignore issues
Conclusion: Always note that good neighborly behavior is very key to create a harmonious living, friendly and welcoming neighborhood and community at large where everyone will feel valued and respected. Always practice good neighborhood etiquette!!!
