Dredge - Catching Crabs is the best way to get rich!

Hello and Welcome back to my blog!



In the last session of my game Dredge, I was able to get a new hull and a few other upgrades which enabled me to have much more cargo space. But the best upgrade I got was the new Haste engine that was given by the Collector for returning an ancient artefact to him. This made my travels a lot faster.


Returning from the Blackstone Isle to the Greater Marrow alerted the Lighthouse keeper and she came to the dock thinking it was her old friend. She must have thought it was the Collector because of the engine sound. I wonder what's their relation? She didn't have any other new dialogues apart from these. She must know some secrets of these islands.


The next couple of days, I went fishing. This time I found the huge SailFish and caught a couple of them. They were too big for the cargo before but now I can fit two of them together. Each sells for over $100 easily.

I installed the new Halogen Spotlight on my boat. This will make it easier to fish at night. I wish there was one more light slot so I could fit two Halogen spotlights.


I was running low on raw materials to upgrade my boat further and also the constant shortage of research parts and cash made me go fishing for the next few days. I fished mostly on the shallow and oceanic fish. Went towards the iron rig up north and bought the fine metal from the Undermarket along with the research part.

I spent these research parts on a better engine. I was at the last engine Stack. It takes six slots to install but has dual turbines and gives impressive speed. Getting 5 research parts is not easy for this though.


I went closer to the Mangroves and started using Pots near the water next to the travelling merchant. I never invested much in this crab strategy. I had to buy a lot of Pots first which itself took some time. All the crabs I would catch will be sold to the Traveling merchant and more Pots were bought. This continued for a few more days until I had a lot of crabs.


Initially, I thought the population of crabs would go down because of excessive exploitation but it didn't. I had tens of pots which were catching these huge Crabs passively and this because a really good source of income.

Also, these Pots will sometimes catch research parts in them (not sure how it works lol) and this was such a good source of these parts too. If I knew these Pots are this good at giving me research parts and cash. I would have tried it a long time ago.


In just a few days, I was able to collect four more research parts which I spent on the new Engine. Later, I got the jet drive engine upgrade researched as well.

But researching these parts was just half of the issue, they cost a lot more to buy and I still needed a few more days of catching the crabs and selling them to the market before I could purchase them and fit them on my vessel.


The next upgrade was the Harvesting Platform. I wasn't planning to install it right away but I was spending my parts on this anyway. Well, the other things were locked and I might have to complete some quest to get the other equipment which is not researchable right now.


It took a few more days of grinding to complete the research of the Harvesting Platform. I can't even see the name of the last two rods.


The only annoying part with this strategy was the almost constant need to repair these pots. Also, it seemed like a bit exploitative. You could just invest your profit back into buying more Pots and repairing them and enjoy an almost unlimited number of research parts. The game should have restricted the number of research parts or introduced a concept which lowers the number of crabs and fish if you fish in a specific location for a long time.

I remember spending a lot of time getting the research parts without this strategy. Also, there is no penalty for resting you can rest and skip days without spending any money or resources. One way would be to have you pay exponentially more every time you skip the time by resting. This cost could be reset after not skipping the day for an entire day or two. That would have been a more interesting and fair way.

In any case, I had a lot of fun with this crab pot strategy. I must have used more than a dozen of them in a small area and just skipped the day and took all the catch. Occasionally you just repair them and you are good to go. A great almost passive way to catch more things from the ocean including the very useful Research part.


I researched all the things I could do right now. Every Rods (excluding the two locked ones), every Engine part, Pots (excluding the locked ones) and all the Nets. I made a ton of progress in this long session. Now I don't have to constantly worry about earning money and getting the research parts. I can explore the waters freely now.

hey it looks pretty interesting this title and just yesterday I got it for free in the Epic Store haha, I really like your graphics and the idea of having a fishing boat I like, but with what you say I see that placing crab traps is something that seems to be very OP hahahaha. out inteteresante what to reduce the amount of fishing in the same area or that as in real life every day you do not go fishing lose money either by payment of crew or port.
