Nigerians believe that unlike every other people from different continents who have phobia for everything, we have little to none here. The same applies to allergy’s and other stuff but I beg to differ when it comes to the matter of having a phobia.
Yesterday, I and a friend of mine had gone to the market to get some house appliances. I gave away some of my old stuff and decided it was time to replace them with new ones. When we got to the section where fans were being sold, my friend had pointed towards a ceiling fan and asked if I wanted one, a question I had immediately answered no to. I would prefer getting a standing fan or rather no fan at all than to get one of those killing machines spinning above my head every time. Yup, I have a phobia for ceiling fans and it all started some few years ago.
I had just finished high school at the time and was doing what every kid who just finished high school was doing at that time, I was learning a skill, barbing to be precise.
One evening, while I was at my place of work, I received some news that almost stopped my heart. My little brother that wasn’t up to ten years old at the time had been rushed to a nearby hospital.
When I asked what happened, I was told he was lying on the floor in the living room, directly under the ceiling fan when it fell and hit him on the head. The whole news had been so scary that I had quickly rushed to the hospital to go see for myself. When I got there, the sight I saw wasn’t a good one.
Luckily for all of us, the ceiling fan had missed him a little bit making the scar not that much of a serious one. My dad had thrown away that ceiling and never replaced it. Even till this day, there isn’t a ceiling fan anywhere in the place we stay.
That whole incident had started my phobia for ceiling fans and from the looks of it, it’s not stopping anytime soon.
