It is always said that; "a friend in need is a friend indeed ". Friendship means different things to different people, although people's experiences as a result of the friends they keep determine if we can choose to make friends or decide to be an island. Friendship is important because there are times we need someone to confide in, share our pains and sorrows with that is where one can desire true friendship. I'm not referring to friends that are there only because of what they can get from you, rather having one that sticks closer than a brother, who understands you and believes in you. A true friend goes beyond the surface, true friendship requires some level of vulnerability. But to have a good friend i must be a good friend to someone else. Having a faithful and understanding friend is the desire of everyone including me. So I would say that a true friend is one who cares about me and is able to have concern and respect for my thoughts and emotions even when i may not agree. A true friend is not one who is repeatedly telling me negative things other people say about me, but it's one that can stand up and defend me against all odds.
True friendship is all about enduring affection, esteem, intimacy, and trust between two people, friendships are important relationships throughout a person's life span. A true friend stands up for me as said earlier. When others try to hurt me emotionally or physically, they do everything they can to make sure i stay safe, it's also defined as mutual and unconditional love. Oftentimes i want to be surrounded by good people but I remember that I'm in the world, where good and bad grows together. True friendship is built on shared principles and shared virtues it's also built on transparency, honesty, trust and understanding, we respect our boundaries and value our feelings and thoughts.
The warmth and companionship that a true friend provide is unmatched. Each one of us wishes to have true friends with whom we could have meaningful conversations, share our burdens. People whom we can call on our bad days and we will know they will not judge, and they will care. A true friend accepts us as we are, they encourage us to become a better version of ourselves, likewise help us see the beauty of who we are. They don't get sidetracked by what others may say or think of us. Instead, they celebrate the us they've come to know. They get to encourage us to make good decisions, they trust our judgment and respect our own personal judgments about things. A true friend acknowledges our feelings but at the same time points us towards a happier and healthier person, they are not complacent in our personal growth, they don't passively sit by and watch us make choices that are not good for us, They learn the art of being our biggest cheerleader while holding us accountable to our goals as well.
These are my own true definition of friendship.
I'm an introvert, and I see everyone as my friends, yet nobody is my friend. I always choose my friends and I hardly make friends because of my past experience with friends, so I become more careful in choosing my friends, I choose to take some time to study their character, their reactions to things, etc before I can choose to make anyone my trusted friend. I do this so as to avoid heartbeat, because it took me some time before I recovered from my previous heartbreak caused by a friend, so I learnt from there I chose to become more careful in choosing friends.
There are so many expectations in having a true friend, so I try as much as possible to be a true friend as well to my friend. Because having a true friend is a gift from above and when I get one I cherish and love them with all my heart. Although I hardly make friends, but everyone is my friend, and out of them I choose one to be my trusted friend.
