Hello fellow Hivers. This week for Hive Open Mic 130, I decided to record a piano improvisation which I have entitled 'Freedom'
I improvise a lot in my spare time in various different styles, just for the joy of it. Usually I let my hands wander about all over the keyboard, making not very much musical sense at all. I have never recorded any of my improvisations before, so I put a bit more thought in to this one.
I like the rhythmic feeling of triplets against duplets, so I decided to go with that idea as a kind of motif. I also wanted to give it some structure as a three section piece, which returns to the main idea, after a contrasting middle. I found myself in a major key in the middle, purely by accident, so I just kind of went with it and quite like the result, even though I suddenly introduced a random blues scale for some reason..I don't know why that happened.
It turned out to have a much darker and heavier feeling than I wanted though. I have been having a hard time with anxiety lately, so perhaps it is simply a reflection of how I was feeling when I recorded it.
Thank you for listening. I hope you enjoy it.
