Doctors plays a very importsnt role in the well being of a person. There were many words spoken for them. There are words in praise and censure of a doctor. While praising him he is called "Peeyushpaani" in Sanskrit i.e. having the nectar of immortality in his hand having power of making a dead person alive. On the other hand they were also considered to the real brother of "Yama", the death God. It means life and death are in their hand. Taking account of this we have a beautiful verses in Sanskrit, which states :
प्रवर्तनार्थमारम्भे मध्ये त्वौषधहेतवे|
बहुमानार्थमन्ते च जिहीर्षन्ति चिकित्सकाः|
Pravartanaarthamaarambhe madhye tvaushadhahetavh.
Bahumaanaarthamante cha jiheershanti chikitsakaah.
Pravartanaarthamaarambhe = Pravartanaarthm + aarambhe.
Pravartanaartha = for the purpose of promoting,
Aarambhe = in the beginning.
Madhye = between, in the middle.
Tvaushadhahetavh = tu + aushadha + hetavah.
Tu = but, and.
Aushadha = medicine.
Hetave = for the purpose of.
Bahumaanaarthamante = bahu + maanaartham + ante,
Bahu = much
Maanaartham = for the sake of self respect
Jiheershanti = desire to plunder
Chikitsakaah = doctors.
These lines likes to highlight the true nature of a doctor, it states :
"In the beginning with a view to promoting himself, and afterwards for the purpose of increasing the sale of medicines and for his self respect, a doctor treats his patients well. But afterwards he becomes obsessed with the desire of plundering his patients."
Seems these lines perfectly implied that today times, when medicinal fields has more of a money making business. Everyone is expecting to make money rather than giving proper treatment to patients. Patients were made through different formalities and procedure rather than immediate treatment. In process they may ends up with their life.
