I have seen many of my friends always looking for more. I was in doubt whether they really need those things or it was the greed that made them to ask for more. People may become attached to material goods and feel a need to accumulate more. It is not merely limited to material good, but people often get into trouble when they greed for money. Societies that value material possessions and financial achievements can lead to greedy tendencies. Low self-esteem, personal insecurities, and a desire for control can contribute to greed. Our Sanskrit verses have the following verses on this topic.
लोभ मूलानि पापानि संकटानि तथैव च|
लोभात्प्रवर्तते वैरं अतिलोभात्विनश्यति||
Lobhamulani papani sankatani tathaiva ch.
Lobhatpravartate vairam atilobhatvinashyati
Lobh = greed.
Moolaani = root (cause).
Paapaani = sins, crimes
Samkataani = dangers, crisis.
Tathaiva = similarly, likewise.
Cha = also.
Lobhaatpravartate = Lobhaat + pravartate.
Lobhaat = because of greed.
Pravartate = originates, results in.
Vairam = enmity, revenge.
Atilobhaatvinashyati = Ati + lobhaat + vinishyati.
Ati = excessive.
Vinashyati = perishes, gets destroyed.
The ancient verses highlights that "Greed is the root cause of all crimes and sins, as also of dangers of various kinds. Greed in a person also results in his enmity with others and excessive greed results in total destruction of such a person".
We have seen that freed always results in some major setback. Greed can make people more likely to be dishonest, immoral, or unethical. They may be more likely to take bribes, cheat, or steal.Greed can undermine social structures and lead to anomie, which is the perception that social bonds are disorderly and moral standards have been destroyed.
So better we should avoid it as much as possible. Greed won't take us anywhere.
