A Teacher plays a very important role in our life. Be it be anybody, who teaches even a simple things in life, we must respect them. In our family, when any elder teaches something to younger ones, we pay huge respect and consider them as a "Guru" status apart from being a family relation. This is what our today's sanskrit shlokas referring too:
एकाक्षरप्रदातारं यो गुरुं नाभिवन्दते|
श्वानयोनिशतं गत्वा चान्डालेश्वभिजायते||
Ekaakshara-pradaataaram yo gurum naabhivandate.
Shvaana-yoni-shatam gatvaa chaandaaleshvabhijaayate.
Ekaakshara = monosyllabic word, Om (ॐ ). Pradaataram = givers of.
Yo = who.
Gurum = the Teacher or 'Guru'
Na + abhivandate = Naabhivandate
Na = not. Abhivandate = expressing reverence .
Shvaana = a dog.
Yoni = form of existence fixed by birth,
Shatam = one hundred times.
Gatvaa = gone, born as.
Chaandaleshu + abhijaayate = chaandaaleshvabhijaayate
Chaandaleshu = a person of the lowest caste.
Abhijaayate = be born again and again
The scholar wanted to tell that, "A person who does not show due reverence to his Guru who taught him even a single word or even initiated the sacred 'Om' (ॐ) Mantra takes birth as a dog one hundred times and ultimately is born as a 'Chaandala'/ demons."
In the hindu culture, or even in other religion the highest position is given to a 'Guru' (a teacher) in the society. In India we celebrate teachers day on 5th September every year. We pay respect to our teachers and take their blessing.
