English Version

Greetings friends and members of the community. Today I come to tell you a little about one of the most emblematic and well known elements of the Cuban capital: The Christ of Havana.

Located in the town of Casablanca, this monumental architectural work of 20 meters high from its base (raised on a pedestal of 3 meters) is located at the top of the coastal heights adjacent to the Bay of Havana, at an altitude of 51 meters above sea level, from where you can also enjoy excellent panoramic views of the entrance channel of the Bay and part of the city on the other side of it.

The origin of this work has its roots in a promise made by Fulgencio Batista's wife after the assault on the Presidential Palace, who promised to create a figure of Christ that would be seen in an imposing way in the city. And of the numerous projects that were proposed, the winner was that of the
eminent Cuban artist Lilian Jilma Madera, author of the work.

It consists of 67 pieces, and is made entirely of Carrara marble in Italy, of which 320 tons were used. Each of its pieces was sculpted in Rome, no less, and received the blessing of Pope Pius XII. Initially the idea was that it would surpass in height the Christ of Brazil, but it was rejected because it was not the most propitious for the site of its location. After being transported and erected in Havana, it was unveiled on December 25, 1958.

For its design the author did not use any model, but did it with her own style and following her own principles, reflecting in this sculpture details with thick lips (in allusion to the mestizaje of the Cubans), and printing serenity to his face, while with his hands in sacred sign he blesses the whole city.

The work of the Christ of Havana has been struck three times by lightning, and has had to be restored several times. It was declared a National Monument in 2017.

So friends, if at some point you visit the Cuban capital, be sure to visit this sculpture full of meaning and splendorous beauty, and enjoy excellent views of the city or simply enjoy the serenity and peace that is breathed in the park that surrounds it. It is sure to be a pleasant memory.

I hope this post has been helpful. See you in another post. Best regards.

Saludos cordiales.
