Life can be funny at times, but then unexpected things happen almost every time. No one can ever predict what will happen in the next few minutes and that's the irony of life. A story can change at any time without planning, and when it changes, it creates another story entirely, making the situation extremely worse than it might have been in the first instance.
Human beings are so unpredictable and sometimes they do and say things that are just way too much to comprehend. A friend this minute can become your worst nightmare in the next minutes. That's why choosing one's friend carefully is the best and wise decision to make. I was in a situation some years back in my teenage years during my secondary school days that would have landed me in trouble, but I was able to turn the table in my favor, although in a positive way, because I wasn't wrong, to begin with.
Back then, I was a naive teenager who was always afraid of getting insulted or talked back, which contributed to my introverted nature. But then people see this as my weak point using that to their advantage. My so-called friend at that time, Jennifer, always saw reasons to taunt me unnecessarily, which I overlook sometimes, but I had it in mind to get back at her one day if she didn't stop. Aside from that, she talks too much; she believes she is outspoken and can respond to any questions and talk to people as she pleases, but then, one day, she met her match.
A new girl named Jane joined my class in ss2 first semester; she was always minding her business, and it took her time before she familiarized herself with other classmates, and that earned her respect. Jennifer went on to say bad things about Jane to some of her friends in another class, probably due to envy or jealousy, and it backfired as Jane was tough but to crack. One of the girls Jennifer talked to was Jane's neighbor, and when they got home, she narrated everything Jennifer said about Jane.
The next day at school, Jane confronted Jennifer and I was shocked by Jennifer's words.
"Hey, I heard what you said about me, Do you mind repeating them right in front of me now?" Jane asked Jennifer.
"What words are you talking about I can't remember saying anything to you or anyone", Jennifer replied.
"I heard you say I am proud and act like high and mighty," Jane said.
"Anyways, it was Oyin who started the discussion; she said you don't talk nor interact with people and that you always act like you are the most intelligent in the class," Jennifer quickly replied.
Jennifer said that because she knew I was not so outspoken and was naive then she thought she could turn the table on me to avoid being tagged as a gossip.
Jane walked up to me where I was sitting and tapped the table because I was buried in the novel I was reading and when I raised my head to see who it was, it was Jane standing akimbo opposite me.
"Can I help you?", I asked.
"Jennifer told me you said I'm proud and I act like high and mighty", Jane said.
I smiled, and that was a bit of a shock to Jennifer, who was walking towards my table; she expected me to be nervous and want to take the blame that wasn't mine, but I took her by surprise, and that changed my life totally from then till now.
"Jennifer, please walk faster", I beckoned to Jennifer and to another girl named Mary, who was there the day Jennifer was talking ill of Jane.
"Jennifer, Jane told me you reported to her about some things I said about her; what was that because I've forgotten I said something?" I asked Jennifer, who is now uncomfortable.
"Be fast about it, Jenny, because I was present the day you were telling us about Jane", Mary said.
Jennifer looked surprised because she never expected me to come at her that way. She became speechless, and Jane gave her a befitting for all her hypocrisy, which made our other classmates avoid her. Since that time, I have become more confident and I always stand up for myself no matter the situation.
Thanks for your time, and your comments will be appreciated.
