🦉 The common tern (Sterna hirundo)
- Sterna stearn, starn (Old English) tern
- hirundo (Latin) swallow
This graceful bird with sharp shapes arrives in mid-May, when there is no snow and it is warm. They fly over the river making creaking sounds. The river itself is their habitat, they nest along the banks or on small islands, they feed on the river.
Their hunting method is a search flight. They fly at a height of several meters above the water, sometimes hanging in the air quickly fluttering their wings. Having seen the prey, they quickly dive under the water for it.
