Talk and Question of the Day

The first-generation Apple iPod has sold for $29,000 (£22,798) at the auction, orchestrated by Rally, a platform known for enabling shared ownership of unique assets like tech memorabilia.

Source

In 2001, the parents of a teenager bought and gifted their son an iPod for $399 (£313) as a Christmas present from the Apple store. Their son wasn't sure what he wanted to do with it, so he shelved it, and then inevitably time passed. While cleaning his childhood home after his father passed away, he found his unopened iPod that has been waiting on the shelf for 22 years. “It truly is a time capsule,” said Rob Petrozzo, co-founder of Rally. Ownership of the iPod was split into 5,000 shares each valued at $5 USD (£4) through Limited Liability Company (LLC), but a private collector bought all 5,000 shares. This is truly incredible. If you want to see the whole news, click here.

A product that was launched about 22 years ago, which perhaps most of us would ignore and throw in the trash, was sold for $ 29,000. After this news, I looked around to see if I had products that could be antiques and have memories. Maybe there is, I'm not aware of it, so I'll look into it in more detail. 😆

I don't own valuable antiques and collectibles, but I love seeing antiques and collectibles. I have NFT collections and I believe some of them will be valuable in the future, I have also gifted NFTs to my kids and I think they will thank me for it in the future. I also plan to have a physical product collection. If I have it I will post it here in the future.

Well it's common for that to happen in countries like the United States or Europe where they like to collect old things, I don't really have a lot of old things in boxes so that wouldn't apply to me hehehehe.

@joseal2020

In general, I consider myself a hoarding person in a certain way, so if I like to collect all kinds of things, who knows if in the future what we can call "junk" may be used for something later. Greetings!
@mario02

Certainly, a proverb says: keep a thing seven years and you'll always find a use for it

I like seeing them but I don't really keep any of them. It reminds me how the cost of old video games have skyrocketted a lot. It's pretty crazy especially when there was limited print and things fail over time.

It's a good idea to donate old items we don't use to the tech museum. 👋

Please stop tagging me. Thank you!

@rayius

count me in thanks

Thanks for the chance!

@daethical

I generally do not because it causes cluttering and will result in excessive hoarding of thing. It's been a while since i see an IPOD, interesting news to cover this mp3 player that transform the world

I also have Antiques and Collectibles .
I have no hobby to collect antiques.
!PIZZA

What do you think about the news above? and Do you like and have antiques and collectibles?
I never had an Apple product (too expensive, at least in my current country and in my former one, an i-pod was considered very superfluous by lot of savers like my parents), but congrats for the owner of the i-pod that went to auction. I like antique in general, even when they aren't technology devices. I still own a very old coffee grinder owned by my mother since she was young, perhaps by my grandmother. I love too much this coffee grinder still working.

Thanks for the giveaways. Please count me in.

I think the news item you mention is a very special case. Not only was the iPod unopened, but also the iPod to iPhone product lines revitalized Apple at a time when they were having serious struggles. Further, the iPod into iPhone era was a truly transformative period in computing. So the original iPod represents a particularly pivotal product.

Does all that mean it was "worth" what was paid for it? For the person who paid it, sure. To most people, probably not.

But antiques are always partially about "the beauty of this object in it's time" so like all beauty it's in the eye of the beholder.

I don't consider my self very into antiques, but sometime I like "cool old stuff." Is there a difference? I don't collect though.

@tinyputerboy

I love antiques, but I've never bought anything antique.

Congratulations @stamato! Count me in for another round, please! Thank you so very much!

The news that you shared is fascinating to me, as I've been a tech geek (along with lots of other diverse things) all my life. The original prices are almost always crazy like that. New, unopened devices like that are rare, but they do pop up from time to time, which is always cool to see! I've come to really appreciate antiques, though I don't really collect any presently. My mother loves and collects them, though! 😁🙏💚✨🤙

As they say, "One man's trash is another man's treasure"
Collectors do look for old relics or items with sentimental value. In the above case is ipod
Personally, i am not a collector, but do look for things that can be a collectable in 10 to 15 years.
For example - old notes, coins etc

!ALIVE

@rtonline! You Are Alive so I just staked 0.1 $ALIVE to your account on behalf of @imfarhad. (1/20)

The tip has been paid for by the We Are Alive Tribe through the earnings on @alive.chat, feel free to swing by our daily chat any time you want, plus you can win Hive Power and Alive Power delegations and Ecency Points in our chat every day.

I like collectibles and antiques but I don't think I'll be buying them. But I'm thinking of collecting my old items that may be valuable in the future.
