I am in the calm before the storm.
The phrase is a nautical saying. Sailors noticed that the sea was calm and the waves were calm before the storm. They were in the calm before the storm and they were able to hear the first clap of thunder. It is during these periods that the storm will begin to gather pace and momentum. During these times, the animals in the area will seek shelter.
This phrase has its origin in ancient Greece. However, today, it is used in many contexts. In its meaning, the term is generally positive. It means that things are not as chaotic as they once were. Although this phrase is a metaphor, it is nonetheless a helpful expression for a time when you're feeling vulnerable or fearful.
