Reading this topic reminded me of the days we were in JHS. It’s a fascinating transition cause when I was in JHS I always wanted to write BECE and be done with it. The thing with me was that, I used to read story books so I wanted to go to SHS so bad. I wanted that experience so bad that I couldn’t even wait to be done with JHS.
Fast forward our results were released and I made it. I was given my first choice school and then the story starts from there. I must say It wasn’t as I thought it will be at first. I missed JHS so badly. I wanted to go back to my JHS days cause things were easier back then. Things didn’t have to be so stressful and as such life was much more fun in JHS or so I thought.
Then the fun part started. Going into SHS was always about the fun part for me lol. So it was normal that the first sign of difficulty wouldn’t be much fun to me.
What I used to enjoy doing in SHS was the sporting activities. We had a range of sporting activities but then there was this particular one which had the whole of Kumasi happy. We had inter houses which wasn’t much fun, inter-schools and then we had a special one called suzo(might be wrong). Suzo was a much more detailed sport cause it entailed all of Kumasi and was mostly about athletics.
Because suzo involved the whole of Kumasi, we used to like it very much. People used to prepare for his type of sporting activity the whole semester even before it got to time.
What was enjoyable about this was that even before we actually reached the day of the activity we had things we did pre hand before it got to the day. On the first day of sizo, we used to go to our neighbouring school which was not very far from our school. We would leave school as early as 4:00 am so we could get back and prepare for the stadium. Because of this some of us wouldn’t sleep the whole night so we wouldn’t miss it.
We will then announce when it was time for the people who wanted to follow us to come with us. When we got there we either had to scale the wall and enter the school or plead with the school to allow us to enter.
We only had one thing to do. We wanted to go there and sing with them. In Ghana, we call it Jama. So we will go in and sing with them, and have a good time before we go back to campus.
Then we prepared for the big occasion. Going to the stadium wasn’t much stress for us. This was because we were very close to the stadium. If you know TI amass you’ll know how close it is to the Baba Yara sports stadium in Kumasi. It was all fun when we get to the stadium. Plus my school used to win it so we were always confident each time we were going to the stadium. Well, we did win most of the time. If the boys didn’t win then the girls will and vice versa, but the boys won most of the time.
This is one thing I’ve really missed about senior high. I’ll give the world just to have that feeling one more time. For people who didn’t have that excitement, I hope they get to enjoy it.
