AstraZeneca vaccine is a United Kingdom experimental vaccine that was paused in March, 2021 due to the discovery of the issues of blood clotting in young people below 40 years. Prior to the suspension of the vaccine majority of the UK population had taken the first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine and the second dose wasn't given.
This study will look at the effectiveness and efficacy of using the complete AstraZeneca (ChAdOx1) vaccine doses vs the use of Pfizer (BNT162b2) and Moderna (mRNA-1273) vaccine in addition to the first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine.
The analysis
- AZ/Pfizer - population (94,569)
efficacy is 67% (59-73% confidence). - AZ/Moderna - population (16,402) efficacy is 79% (62-88% confidence).
- AZ/AZ - population (430,100) efficacy is 50% (41-58% confidence).
Findings: the combination of AstraZeneca (1st dose) and either Moderna or Pfizer vaccine (second dose) is more effective or gives a stronger immune response compared to the homologous AstraZeneca vaccine as 1st and 2nd doses.
The end point of this analysis was symptomatic Covid-19 infection
