Hey guys from CineTV, today I’m going to talk about Megan, a horror movie that was quite popular several months ago and that I could watch recently.

First of all, this was not the gory horror movie I expected, it’s more of a film with satirical elements intertwined with horror that tells us about a future in which toys will be completely electronic and dependant on such a well developed A.I. that they will be able to behave in human like ways.

Here’s where Megan makes her appearance, she is a doll with an operating system that develops some kind of emotional bond with a girl, who starts living with her aunt after a car accident ended her parent’s lives, and the problem is that Megan is a project that’s still in the testing phase and being developed by the girl’s aunt. This was the starting point that hooked my interest in seeing more how the plot could develop.

Even though it is basically another movie about killer toys, with some scenes that make use of a shocking and dark sense of humor, I really liked the film’s social criticism about the dependence on technology and how some parents let the childrearing to this technological devices and how these can affect a healthy childhood development and education, causing issues for children’s relationships with other people in the real world or making them distant from the adults that are suppose to take care of them.

This is reflected in how the grieving girl develops a strong attachment to a product that pretends to replace human company. Another interesting aspect is how her aunt, a woman that’s only focused on her career as a children’s toy developer, ironically has no idea on how to interact with children and this makes it really hard for her to connect with her niece.

When it comes to the aesthetic and the special effects, it’s noticeable how the filmmakers put a lot of effort into creating an uncanny doll that wouldn’t resemble any other toy from any other movie, like the famous Chucky. When the doll was dancing in some of the scenes it looked kind of funny to me, but when she was still and quiet she gave an eerie feeling with her empty and dead gaze. The character also had a very disturbing reasoning, especially because it resembled the weird A.I. creations that I’ve seen on the internet that have resulted in some very disturbing art and videos.

In conclusion, this movie surprised me a lot, since at the beginning I thought it was going to be a mess. The way the film delivers the suspense is very entertaining, thanks to a good rhythm and some genuinely creepy moments. One thing you have to take into consideration when watching this film is that you shouldn’t try to make much sense of some of the situations, and the secondary characters don’t really add much to the plot, but the film’s social commentary and three main protagonists are really well developed and I think that makes it worth watching.

Thanks for reading my post!
