My personal thoughts about the Silent Hill 2 Remake

Hello guys, it’s been a while since the last time I posted on hive, I’ve been busy with other things and didn’t have enough free time during the past days, anyways I am here to share my thoughts about the Silent Hill 2 Remake.

Silent Hill is one of my favorites franchises, it has a unique style of terror that doesn’t use jump scares, instead it creates a disturbing story and atmosphere that make you fear the unknown, something that very few horror games are able to accomplish and this is also something I miss a lot.

When Konami decided to cancel the fascinating P.T. Project I thought the franchise was never going to come back with a new release let alone a remake. But the miracle I’ve been waiting for occurred, just not in the way I wanted.

First of all, I think releasing a Silent Hill 2 remake, the most beloved one of all in the fandom, is a mistake and a very risky move for Konami. I belong to the group of people who think that a remake of the first game is a safer choice, it would have been easier to actualize on a technical level but it also could have worked as a base for newcomers to get to know the lore of the saga, since the second game assumes the player is already familiar with this world.

Leaving aside this topic, and focusing on this new version of Silent Hill 2, I think that the glimpses we’ve gotten until now don’t look very good, in fact I think the level of production looks inferior to other recent remakes, for example the Resident Evil remakes. My impression is that Konami left this project on the hands of the cheapest and most inexperienced team they found, because honestly the game looks amateurish, especially if you compared it to the Alone in the Dark reboot, which from my point of view looks much more promising even though it doesn’t have a big budget.

Certainly there’s still time until the release of the remake and there could be the possibility that the game ends up being better than what we’ve been shown, but as a fan of the saga I can’t help but worry, especially with the developing team’s reputation. Whether they are capable of recreating a final product that doesn’t look outdated, this game could end up being a failure that leads to the final dead of the franchise, which would be ironic since I know a lot of people reduce this saga to just James and Pyramid head and don’t really appreciate the rest of the games in the franchise.

Maybe the thing I’m worried about the most is the way Konami has devolved in the past years into a company of questionable choices that doesn’t care about doing a good job with their more outstanding sagas. Proof of that are the recent Metal Gear Solid collection and the last Silent Hill projects as is the case with Ascension and The Short Message.

I hope I’m wrong and things turn out well with the Silent Hill 2 Remake, well enough to be successful and for other games of the saga to be remade too, so the new generation of gamers can get to know the greatness of this legendary saga.

Anyway, this is all I have to say. Thank you very much for reading and supporting my post if you liked it.

I think they made the right choice when it comes to 2, first of all it's a separate game that doesn't follow the central line (1 and 3) and secondly it's the people's favourite so it would create much more interest than if they remade 1. The graphic engine seems to me the right one, the controls look good (shoulder camera and fluidity of movements) I even think there will be dodging movements. The look of the game (scenery and creatures) are made by Masahiro Ito himself so to assume that the game looks bad is to suggest that the great illustrator lost his talent (which in my personal opinion is not the case).

Silent Hill should never have been compared to Resident Evil as Capcom has always had more time, development and capital than Konami, there is no point of comparison, even with the classics, Capcom kicked Konami's ass in sales when comparing the sales of the two franchises.

The rendering is very reminiscent of the classic and you can tell it's on purpose because they used the Unreal Engine 5 and with that engine there's no way the graphics look "wrong" by mistake.

Now, if the story is crap, that's another matter, but visually and in terms of controls, it looks good.

'I think that, as they did with resident evil 4 remake, if with SH2 remake they respect the story (which is perfectly developed), do not remove scenarios but maybe add and respect what we love most about the game and just remove or change the bugs or complaints that were in the classic, they have no reason to fail and as far as I know Bloober team has a short leash with this game. I liked your post, cheers

Hi, I'm not criticizing the art design of Masahiro Ito, he is a genius no matter what. I also think the game’s graphics looks good, but in my opinion the animations of James and the enemies need more work because they look kind of rough for a modern game, even if they were done that way on purpose.

Silent Hill has always been compared to its primary rival franchise which is Resident Evil. If you look back, Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 3 and Silent Hill 4: The Room where technically on par with the remake of the first Resident Evil, Resident Evil Zero and both Resident Evil Outbreak released for PS2, I even dare to say that the characters from these Silent Hill games looks more realistic.

As I mentioned in the post, my main concern about this remake has to with Konami, every gamer familiarized with their most popular franchises knows about this company reputation in recent times, so I cannot fully trust in what they are doing.

Thank very much for stopping by bethyjade, it is nice to know there is another Silent Hill fan in this gaming community. Best regards!
