Hail to the Hive!

Situated about a 20 minute bus ride or drive away from where we currently have narrowboat ‘Cygnet’ moored is the ancient stone circle at Avebury in Wiltshire. We’ve passed through multiple times on our way to the boat and I decided we needed to make a visit as we will be moving the boat soon and may miss our chance. Very pleased we made the effort.

The Stome Circle dates way back to approx 6000 years ago and it pre dates Stone Henge, which is a stones throw away ( well not these stones they’d be hard to throw), and is dissected by a road as a few hundred years ago a settlement sprung up that became a village plonked right in the middle of it. This makes it quite a unique set up as the circle is practically cut up into segments but it also makes it very accessible.

Also unlike Stone Henge you are allowed to wander about the place, free of charge and are able to touch the stones. There’s also a pub in the village which is a welcome stop after a days wandering around the monument. Bonus!

Weather erosion over several thousand years has made this one look almost like a horses head. I’m pretty sure it’s a coincidence and was not what it was originally designed to look like.

The Stones also cried out for a bit of monochromatic attention and well you know….
