I've been spending my holiday reading the high fantasy series called Stormlight Archives, I've written some reviews about it on Hive Book Club too.
I'm a severe fan of fantasy and mythology and high fantasy has a way of mixing them both, of course high fantasy produces their own monsters.
I'd wanted to search for a monster coin that stemmed from the high fantasy approach. Searched for the Chasmefiend silver coin depicting a Chasmefiend from Stormlight Archives but it hasn't been minted yet😔
Thus I decided to go to the mythical side and looked for a beast that was both iconic and cool.
What I first saw was a dragon, but I'm sure everyone has had their load of dragon coins on here and I pride myself in being unique...
So here's the Hydra!!
Mythical Creatures
HYDRA 🐍
This is possibly one of the most well known mythical creature.
But in every 100 people that have heard the monster, only 10 people know the true story.
According to Greek mythology, the hydra is the child of the giant Typhon and the hybrid Echidna who was half female and half snake.
This venomous monster had countless head and when you kill one, two more grows in its place.
This made killing the beast nearly impossible and made its killing to be the second of the twelve impossible tasks given to Hercules.
He did manage to slay the beast with some help after noticing that heads that were killed with fire weren't regrown and/or multiplied.
And with the help of the goddess Athena, Hercules managed to kill the final head which was immortal. (Not so much since it was killed)
Regardless, the sheet ferocity of this beast earned it in a place in Hercules tasks and a place as the fifth coin of the Mythical Creatures series from Niue.
The front has a picture of the hydra engraved detailing its hissing legs and sheer ferocity.
While the reverse has a busy of Queen Elizabeth with the money denomination of the coin, the year of mintage and issuer.
The artist and coin maker Asalmet Baltaev did wonders with this coin as the aesthetics and details just woos any and everyone who looks at it.
As you can see it's a standard coin of wonderful silver value and a lovely detail as most Niue minted coins are...
A lovely item for mythology fans like myself....
