Yesterday night my friend and I went to get food at the traffic light, I was weak and I was holding on to her for support.
"You should have stayed in the hostel, you're struggling to walk."
She queried as we made our way down the busy road, I was dodging Keke's with my last strength and squeezing past the smallest exits.
My hand holding her closely, my legs were vibrating and going numb with each step, my head was pounding and I could feel the stabs in my stomach region. I was getting an ulcer attack. But before I could let her know, we arrived at the food place.
I leaned against the pole and watched her make her way through the dozens of people, my head ached from the seller's yells, the customers requesting more meat and more salad, the Keke's blaring horns, and the drivers cursing the pedestrians and their fellow road users.
Amid the resounding pounding in my head and the chaos around me, I heard a small voice.
"Aunty, give me money I'm hungry." It was in the worst pitiful voice I had heard.
The kid would suck at acting. I didn't open my eyes, I just lay there on the pole, my eyes closed, my legs balanced on the floor.
After a few more minutes, he left, I knew because I could hear him recite the same words to me.
I opened my eyes to look for my friend but she was on the other side, my body still ached and so I went back to the pole.
A few moments later, I heard shouting, I didn't think much of it, probably one of those customer bants and so I shut my eyes even tighter.
Till I heard my friend shout and my eyes snapped open immediately.
But before I could react, I felt a sharp pain in my lower back, immediately I felt the twist in my brain and I screamed and dropped to my knees and fell face down on a rock.
I heard screaming, cars screeching, my friend's voice, plates dropping to the ground, footsteps, and my yells.
I heard the tiniest voice in my ear. Repeatedly as he stabbed me.
"Aunty, give me money I'm hungry."
Picture is mine
