Wecome! β€οΈππ
Hi there! πππ This is my entry for this week's contest named Water Caller's Dayoff. Today I drew Water Caller on the beach but she is sulking because she forgot her change of clothes. π Since I am bad at drawing characters, I decided to practice some techniques then I apply it here on this piece. Drawing characters something so common in art yet it seems too complicated once you started learning the technical ways to it. π I don't exactly know why it is hard for me to draw beautiful faces but I am still dedicated in learning and improving my art! π I want to tell stories of people while they are living their lives trough my art and how can I achive that if I won't put the effort in learning how to make them, so here we are! ππ
Now, here are the steps that I followed in making this piece:
Step 1 βοΈ
First, did a quick sketch of the piece that I want to make. I want to focus on the emotion and the facial expression so I decided to make it a portrait of the character. I just did a scribble on the canvas just to make something fast and loose. π
Step 2 βοΈ
Next is I tried cleaning up the lines a little better while placing stuff on proportions. I am still not good at drawing faces so please bear with me until I can do a proper face. π
Step 3 βοΈ
Step 3 is when I made a more cleaner lineart for my piece. I was thorn between drawing this character with lineart or if I should just remove the lineart and draw it as a painting but in the end, I decided to draw it with the lineart. π
Step 4 βοΈ
I then colored the piece. I used the color red to serve as my shadows just to add more dynamic coloring for my piece. I also didn't color the white of the eyes with white paint but rather a more lighter variation of the color peach while the lips is a has the more darker version.
Step 5 βοΈ
Step 5 is when I started coloring the rest of the piece then blending it. I decided to go for a more stylized hair so that I could grab the attention of the viewer near the face of the piece.
Step 6 βοΈ
I then aaded more details in the eyes. I drew some eyelashes which took me a long time to do since I can't seems to make it right. I can't find the right angle where I will contour the lines of the eyelash to give a sense of depth in the eyes but in the end, even if it is not perfect, I managed to make something that I like.
Step 7 βοΈ
Next is I drew a background and fixed some proportion mistakes. At first, I just want to make the background all black but something inside of me is so against it that in the end, I drew two separate versions. The proportion mistake was a nightmare to deal with! π΅ I was almost done with the piece when suddenly I noticed that the forshortening was wrong! Rather than redoing everything from the beginning, I decided to just add another leyer and just paint over the mistake. π€£ That way, the thing that I just need to redraw is the lineart.
Here is the first rendition that I made. a simple beach and a some sea water. But since I feel that the horizon line is too high and I was not telling a more detailed story with this kind of background, I decided to make another one.
And here is the other one. I lowered the horizon line here just a little so that we could see more of the sky and some far away island while still telling that she is at the sea. The backgrounds are not fully rendered and was intentionally blurry so that it won't take the attention of the viewer from the main subject.
The Second is what I am going to use in this piece. π
Step 8 βοΈ
And then, lastly, I added a a color dodge of purple on the eyes to make it glow and to attract the viewer's attention there first.
Here is a version where there is no line art. What do you prefer the most?
And that is how I made this piece! I hope you enjoyed it. β€οΈ
