The second issue of the new Pirate Queens Series is the

2021 Solomon Islands Ching Shih

SPECIFICATIONS

- Material: Pure Silver (99.99%)

- Finish: BU

- Weight: 1 oz

- Diameter: 40.00 mm

- Face Value: $2.00

- Reverse: A majestic phoenix draws a circle around the ship with its tail. The inscription “CHING SHIH” and the weight and fineness complete the design.

- Obverse: The portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the denomination and the year of issue.

This premium bullion coin from the Royal Australian Mint depicts the pirate ship of Ching Shih.

Zheng Yi Sao (also known as Ching Shih), who was a woman who led of one of the largest, most successful and feared gang of pirates the world has ever seen. Sao’s reign as the queen of pirates was short-lived but reached heights never seen before or since. She was responsible for a great amount of terror — terror so great that China was willing to let her and her followers simply walk away as long as they would only let go of their stranglehold on the country. The confederation’s six fleets were designated by color — black, blue, purple, red, white and yellow; Zheng Yi the husband to CHing Shih, commanded the red fleet, which was the largest and most powerful. Phoenix was their mascot.

The Story of Ching Shih would have made a great Soap opera I would love to watch. There is a Hong Kong production of the venerable pirate Queen but like most Chinese productions her Kung Fu was way over the top. The pirated (Lol!) video version didn't have English subtitles so I had to guess the dialogue.

I don't remember. The characters are typical simplified Chinese that both Cantonese or Mandarin can follow regardless of the actual dialogue used. I think most current productions are in Mandarin now.

Wow, can't believe you actually know of the Hong Kong production. Whenever i traveled to HK in the past, i've always tried to get myself a VHS copy of the production that used to be broadcasted on old time tv.

Would have to travel to a place called Temple Street (give it a search online), where you'd expect to find old antiques and garage type sales in an open market scenario on a MASSIVE scale. I've never had any luck in finding the Ching Shih soap. Not even my grandma has that frickin tape!

I miss Hong Kong very much.

I have a hard copy DVD of 'The Pirates', a Korean Production of a fictional Pirate Princess unrelated to Ching Shih. It's more a comedy. I haven't had time to comb Vancouver's China town video shops to find it, Ces't la vie.

I have a trusted HK connection where I get my Trade Dollars with or without Chop marks and he accepts LTC as payment. I'm in the process of re-discovering the Asian side of my family tree. I have a few Chinese coins coming up by Sunday.

It's made by the Royal Australian Mint with a mintage of 10,000 only!
It is not available in Apmex and JMB, but is available in Coin Shoppe, @maddogmike!

@kerrislravenhill @silversaver888 the famous short story writer Jorge Borges once wrote a tale of the most Famous female Pirate, the Widow Ching...of course based on the real pirate herself, yet romanticised to a degree in his books.
