Guess what?
I received a super fresh mochi from a tiny manju shop in Hilo!!
There is a belief in Japan that rice is the food for the dead before they reach nirvana, and mochi is a lucky charm.
It will be a good sign if they get Two Ladies mochi on the way.
Mochi is typically consumed in place of rice during the New Year holidays, which in Japan historically last until the seventh.
Freshly prepared mochi is a whole different experience; it's softer, stickier, and the natural sweetness of the rice shines through. Commercial dried mochi cakes are readily accessible at any Japanese grocery store and are unbeatable for convenience.
This box of mochi is from the Big Island of Hawaii, brought over by a friend!
In traditional Japanese culture, mochi is considered "food of the Gods" and is associated with successful marriages and good fortune.
In addition to being a delight, mochi was also utilized to supply much-needed sustenance because one tiny piece is nearly equal to consuming a cup of rice.

Some market freezer areas (Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, certain supermarkets, and Asian specialty shops and eateries) may have packaged mochi. Or we could do it ourselves.
You may learn how to create sweet mochi from this video. Mochiko (sweet rice flour), sugar, and water are the ingredients. Very easy! You can use it to make your favorite Japanese treats, such as Mochi Ice Cream, or you can consume it on its own.
