Greetings again, hoping you have a Sunday of rest and solace. Nature and its perfection always surprise me. Seeing how each animal, each plant, each rock, each space has its function and its ecological niche in the various ecosystems. Days ago, I was removing branches and dry leaves from the vine in the internal garden, which is a trillolit (Combretum indicum), using a broom to shake the lower part of the vine. At that moment I saw a structure similar to a small honeycomb, attached to one of the branches. I avoided touching it, and I even took this photo that you see, and I continued with my task of shaking the vine, when another honeycomb fell at my feet, and it was the one that I took in my hands, and it seemed super curious to me, I didn't know what animal It was, because it was obviously a nest or honeycomb of some insect.

As it was the first time I saw this, curiosity led me to open this second nest with a blade, although now I regret it, because I prevented the birth of what was housed inside. When I opened it, I found that it had elongated and very narrow cells, which gave me the idea that it housed some type of eggs, pupae or larvae.

When reviewing the images, I found that this structure is an OOTHECA, a word that refers to an egg deposit, a conglomerate of eggs, obviously insects. Examples of oothecae are the packages that cockroaches leave in their wake, full of eggs; but this other one is a Praying Mantis OOTHECA.

I know that this ootheca is a praying mantis, because in addition to the coincidence of photos on Google Lens, this species of insects inhabits this vine and has turned out to be a blessing. I previously told you about the pests that plagued this plant and my efforts to control them, but since the praying mantises arrived, they have eliminated that annoying problem. I have also told you about the mantids, which moved to my internal garden, and I am very happy about it, because they are very efficient biocontrollers, and they do not bother the melipona combs that are inside my house. I think they opt for larger prey, such as cottony mealybugs and day and night butterflies, since every day I find remains of wings under the vine.

According to what I was able to investigate, from inside these oothecae, small praying mantises emerge, whose bodies are very soft, but when they come into contact with the air, the exoskeleton hardens and then we have a miniature mantis, with all the abilities to walk, jump, fly and hunt while growing. Obviously, from now on I will be more careful, because for the mantises to leave the ootheca, a time of 2 to 6 months is required. I was also able to learn that the mantises that are born in a place generally always return to that place to lay eggs, that is, to leave their oothecae, which means that I will always have praying mantises in my internal garden, of course, as long as there are food, because they eat many insects, such as spiders, aphids, also lizards and even hummingbirds
