A stop by the Church | Our Lady of Sorrows in Medellín

in #hive-1787083 years ago

Greetings friends, I reappear pleased to be among my friends of the Architecture+Design Community in this occasion to share with you a little bit about a catholic temple in the La America sector in the city of Medellin, Colombia. Yes friends, I want to show you the church Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, which attracted me for its history and of course for its neo-Byzantine architecture especially for the architectural elements added on the main facade of the temple. I found this admirable and although I am not used to photographing temples, in fact it is my first time, I wanted to bring you this one that I came across in recent days and I thought it would be a good idea to show it to you.

What caught my attention the most.

What caught my attention the most were the domes, the relój and the large windows in the structure of the main facade. All these architectural elements give beauty to the building that is located in the middle of a very busy sector of Medellin.

2..jpg

The central dome is very striking, decorated with borders in relief on its surface that are joined to crown the temple with the Christian symbol of the cross. The truth is that this dome caused me admiration, it stands out perhaps for the combination of its colors but also for the details in its form and style.

25.JPG

The clock in the central dome is another striking element, perfectly placed so that everyone can use it in the adjacent areas of the temple.

22.JPG

The set of small domes, which are on the sides of the main dome, also attracted my attention because it gives the neo-Byzantine style to the structure.

23..jpg

24.JPG

As you can see there are two small ones right next to the center dome and next to it there are two more at the ends of the main façade. I find these elements fascinating and I like the way the upper main façade looks, with the roof cover decorated with all this set of domes.

27.jpg

The other thing that catches my attention is the set of windows. On the main façade there are three doors, the door in the middle, which is the main one, has a set of windows on top, seven small arched windows and on top there are three large windows. I like this design of windows between columns and succession of arches very characteristic of the neo-Byzantine style.

11.JPG

Aesthetically speaking, all of the above is what most caught my attention about this building.

3.JPG

Without side facades

Side facades does not have, as you can notice the left side of the temple is attached to commercial premises and the other right side is also not a facade as such. Although you can see that it faces Carrera 84, but I do not consider it a side facade. So I think that lateral facades practically do not exist, it only has a main facade.

Historically the temple has been in the same place on Calle 44 with Carrera 84, since the nineteenth century after a season full of paperwork to become a reality with its rectangular plan and wide structure designed by Agustin Goovaerts, architect of Belgian nationality.

But the temple Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, has been involved by calamity in the twentieth century on two occasions, one in 1979 when it was affected by an earthquake that caused damage to the structure and then in 1986 suffered a bomb attack which destroyed much of it.

This is a temple with an interesting history that has been built and rebuilt with the help of the parishioners and has been preserved to this day. There was another detail that caught my attention but I did not have much information and that is the presence of two plaques embedded in the main entrance.

18.JPG

The first plaque refers to Bodas de Oro and is on the left side of the main entrance, looking at the church from the front.

It reads:

THE PARISHIONERS OF LA AMERICA
GRATEFULLY CONSECRATES THIS REMEMBRANCE
TO THEIR PARISH PRIESTS, PRIESTS AND
FOUNDERS ON THEIR GOLDEN JUBILEE
OF CANONICAL ERECTION
THE AMERICA 1898-1948

21.JPG

The second Diamond Jubilee plaque is on the right side.

20.JPG

This second plaque reads:

DIAMOND JUBILEE
THE PARISH COMMUNITY
OF THE AMERICA
THANKS THE LORD
AND TO ITS EXALTED PATRONESS
FOR THE BENEFITS GRANTED
IN ITS SEVENTY-FIVE YEARS
OF EXISTENCE
1898-1973

En esta segunda placa se puede leer:

BODAS DE DIAMANTE
LA COMUNIDAD PARROQUIAL
DE LA AMERICA
AGRADECE AL SEÑOR
Y A SU EXCELSA PATRONA
LOS BENEFICIOS CONCEDIDOS
EN SUS SETENTA Y CINCO AÑOS
DE EXISTENCIA
1898-1973

This building has an imposing design with lintels, columns, arches that give it a fortified appearance, perhaps because of the many reconstructions to which the temple has been subjected, to make it strong in case of an upcoming test of fire and can continue to survive in time.

I only got to the door of the temple, because since I was a child I do not like images for worship, this is something very personal but I could see three naves inside and the details are typical of a church in this neo-Byzantine style. You can see arches, a very decorated ceiling with striking lamps, images for worship, all very ornate according to a Catholic temple.

Good photos my friend @sorprendente... and excellent review about this church. We have posted the same day and almost at the same time about neo-Byzantine style churches, what a coincidence. This church has quite neat elements as far as I can tell from the photos, plus it is very striking for its colors 😃

Greetings friend @afterglow, if the exterior appearance of this temple is very striking, although it has some details but in general terms it is a neat construction. The colors please me, it is a temple that stands out. Blessings to you

Greetings friend @sorprendente. It's indeed a huge delight to welcome your very first sacred building to be featured in the Architecture+Design Community, Like you, the architectural details of the church of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores that caught my attention were the imposing domes, round clock, and massive windows, all in harmonious relationship with the overall Neo-Byzantine design signature of that iconic landmark. Thank you for showing us this Colombian masterpiece of architecture. Best wishes! 😊

I appreciate your greeting and words friend @storiesoferne, thank you for the reception to my publication on this building of catholic worship. Already with this first temple I hope someday to return to show you others that exist also with admirable and imposing architecture in the Colombian city where I am. Also best wishes to you and yours! 😊

Arches, arches and arches...such a wonderful holy construction! It reminds me of some cathedrals I saw in Western Europe (more precisely, in Germany). Its facade is truly remarkable, not only because of its beautiful design, but also because of the distinctive colors that attract the eye and attention.
Regards

You are very right @soulsdetour in Germany there are impressive cathedrals, although I have never traveled to that country but by reference of websites and encyclopedias at home, even by publications including here in HIVE I have learned a little and enjoyed some temples for their architecture and the history that surround them. Thank you for appreciating this temple that I have brought from Colombia. Greetings.
