Hivechess Tournament S12 Final Results: @sawko is the new old champion

in #hive-1572862 years ago

Dear chess fans,

the final round of S12 was played yesterday, an 80min. 4+1 arena with 23 players and an average rating of 1891 (the highest in this season!).

@jaki01 was the lucky winner, his fourth win in S12 - same as @sawko. It was a very close race, @eniolw was leading for quite a part of the tournament, but @jaki01 at the end could overtake him. I said lucky winner, because while @eniolw had to match up 4 times with @sawko, @jaki didn´t have to face this tough opponent at all! Third was @sawko, followed by @emic (emichessmaster) and @fcastro177.
Congratulations to All!

In this position from @jaki01 (Black) against @eniolw White has some pressure along the h-file but Black can claim a solid advantage if he plays e.g. gxh5, because also the f3 square is attacked.

The plan to simplify is good in principle, but Black played Qf4+?? and after Qxf4 Rxf4 hxg6 White suddenly has a winning advantage! Black tried Bxf3 to lure the White rook away from the h-file where he pins the h pawn, but consequently White recaptured with gxf3!
image.png
Black played h5 (the best move), but a few moves later that h pawn will fall and White´s g pawn will be the game winner.

In my first game (with White) against @kreur I blundered already on move 9 with f3. Do you know why this was a blunder?
image.png
https://lichess.org/RJoTltOV/white#17

Because the f3 pawn can´t be defended after Bxf3! The knight is pinned and if gxf3 Qh4 is checkmate! Fortunately my opponent had overlooked it! I could keep my extra pawn and later won the game.

The rules you can look up in the announcement post.

No surprise and major changes in the last round, @sawko was the convincing champion of this season. It was actually not that clear as it looks now - until round 5 where @eniolw was missing, and since then there was nobody who could challenge @sawko anymore. How close it was can be better seen by looking at the average points achieved per round, which was 23,4 by @sawko and 23,33 by @eniolw (third was @jaki01 with 21,86). I hope next time @eniolw can participate 100% to have a fair chance for the champion title. Or maybe we should adapt the rules and delete one - the worst - result from all players, to compensate for one-time (technical) failures or misses? What do you think about this?

The bronze medal went to @franu (Tz995) - for the first time he landed on the podium, thanks to his very solid performance. For the first time also @jaki01 is missing from the Top3, but with only 7 out of 10 rounds a place on the podium is not feasible given the many strong players.

In the close race for the fourth place in the last round I could catch up with @rosmarly and we ended up with equal points, but since I needed one more tournament to achieve the same points, the fourth rank deservedly went to @rosmarly!

Congratulations to the winner and all participants!

Special price

The special price of 15 Hive for the highest performance in relation to the own rating went to @rodrook with a difference of solid 214,9 rating points! Congratulations as well!

As always, the prices will be transferred in app. one week, after the payout of this post (and any other posts using the @badge-646464 beneficiary).

Season stats

In total most players ever (67!) participated in S12, but we had on average only 24,4 players participating per round (in S10 it was >30!). Many players participated only once or twice, which is sad. So all in all only 22 players (less than a third) qualified for prices (in S10 it was 40, but with less strict rules). On the other hand, the pricepool will dwarf the one from S10 (477 Hive) and could get close to 600 Hive. So the average price per player will be quite juicy! Most likely I will keep it that way, I want to incentivize players who play regularly.

The average tournament rating of season 12 was 1851,9 (slightly higher than last season).
Again 8 players (mostly the usual suspects😀) had a 100% participation, well done!

Thank you all for your participation & engagement (and the upvotes)!

And thanks to the other posters for streaming (which was this season quite rare), tournament reports, putting @badge-646464 as beneficiary and advertising this event in your blogs!

I am signing off (chess-wise) for a summer break, but somewhere end of August S13 will start! Stay tuned, keep practicing and enjoy the remaining summer!

Question: Would you prefer a round robin tournament for the next season, like in S11 or the usual format? Or 2 parallel events, one for 2000+ players, and one for <2000 ones?
And what do you think about a registration fee? Would you pay e.g. 2 Hive upfront to participate?
Any other suggestions for S13?

Sort:

excellent tournament, congratulations to the winners. I think it affected me not being able to play tournament 5, maybe I would have gotten closer to the top 3 who knows, but very happy to be in the top 5. Cheers

Congratulations!

Prize received. Despite not playing alot, I still got alot of Hive.

@stayoutoftherz why don't I try hard to win next season? I can try, right?

Thanks for the prizes and once again for the splendid organization.

Most welcome, thanks for playing. Would be great if you can join more often next time, to make it more challenging for the others 😀.

Thanks for a great tournament guys.

Congratulations to this season's winner!

Thank you @stayoutoftherz for organizing once again, you've been Awesome!

I think I stand a better chance with the arena format and the lighteye system so I vote for continuity

A registration fee would be a good addition too.

I sometimes change formats, the last one is:
| daily| dR-960| 17.34| @antipops|
new will be
| daily| R²960| **.35| @hive-102040|

congratulations to the winners.

I still think that the blitz should be separate from the bullet, so as not to count the sprinters along with the cross runners

Bullet was only 1 out of 10, so I guess it didn´t impact the overall ranking.

That's true, and anyway, 2 + 1 is nearly not faster in average than 3 + 0 (as soon as 60 moves are played 60 * 1 second are one full minute). :)

Furthermore concerning the 'sprinters': paradoxically their advantage is even bigger in longer time controls than in short ones because longer time controls allow to berserk by still having enough time to win nevertheless and get 3 points instead of 2 only (and if they lose they have immediately the opportunity to win again - they can play at least twice as many games during one tournamnet as the average 'snail' by berserking). :)

Thanks and Congratulation to all the Season winners and hosts !!!

Question: I prefer the usual format. Two hive should not discourage most.
Note 1: @jaki01 missing many tournaments games show up as a season winner (OK Congrats and good luck at splinterlands).
Note 2: Next season my elo should be too high for the “special price”.

Thank you for the fun!
"2 parallel events, one for 2000+ players, and one for <2000 ones?" - That will be honest and fair

I will think about it (but the time consumption is unfortunately almost doubling).

I hope next time @eniolw can participate 100% to have a fair chance for the champion title.

I was about to miss the last round too, since I had technical issues, but they were fixed shortly before the round started. Thank you for your hopes. I'm not the luckiest of the players, so I'm going to need it.

Or maybe we should adapt the rules and delete one - the worst - result from all players, to compensate for one-time (technical) failures or misses? What do you think about this?

That's an interesting idea and it's not unfair, since it applies to everyone.

Would you prefer a round robin tournament for the next season, like in S11 or the usual format?

I feel like the current format is less stressful. The other option would be totally great if it could be automatic.

Or 2 parallel events, one for 2000+ players, and one for <2000 ones?

I'm fine with both.

And what do you think about a registration fee? Would you pay e.g. 2 Hive upfront to participate?

May discourage the registration while increasing the commitment of the registered players.

Any other suggestions for S13?

Swiss tournaments should be the majority.

Congrats to the winners. Congrats to @rodrook for his performance. Congrats to everyone for being part of this. Congrats to @stayoutoftherz for keeping this long league and spreading enthusiasm.

Thanks @eniolw, I hope to out grow this award next season.

About our first game - after f3 Qe3 might be even better, pretty much everything pinned or blocked.

About format for S13 - I would strongly prefer normal format over playing few games of one big tournament every week, which is really bad for people that cant be available every week. And also for their opponents assuming they wanna play and would won by not having opponent present. Plus it introduces another luck element.
However if for example 16 players are present splitting into 2 groups and playing round robin with 7 rounds all during one evening sounds interesting. Cons is ofc that if someone arrives late he cant play anymore that week.

Black can claim a solid advantage if he plays e.g. gxh5 ...

The second lost game was even more terrible. I had won a full piece and then also built an attack on the opponent's king, but 'managed' to lose anyhow anyway under time pressure.

I wonder how I would play tournament chess nowadays? Would I make this horrible kind of mistakes even with more time (because I simply lost the ability of concentration and focus) or would time be able to heal my tendency of having some black outs from time to time?
I should join a chess open one day for test purposes, lol.

Apart from all that I really like the format without berserking.

We all do horrible mistakes every tournament... sometimes bad ones sometimes even worse ones :)

agree about no berserking, lead to better chess overall imho.

2.) 60 min maximum, I sometimes have to play on two monitors

even better 30+30

what do you mean by 30+30?

2 rounds each with different reglaments (S13+S14) with a break, it would be possible to combine 960² openings with one and a half or something else more exotic

That would double the work for the organizer 😀. I have other things to do!

by the way, in the next copy of one of my tables again there are no my tournaments, which are daily

Sorry, I will add it. Which from your several accounts is hosting those? Which time (GMT) and what is the name of the tournament?
