The L Game / Das L Spiel

in #hive-1572863 years ago

Dear gamers! / Liebe Spielfreudige!

If Tic Tac Toe is too boring, or if you need a break from chess or Splinterlands, then maybe the L game is something for you!
It is totally simple, but nevertheless you have to think ahead! It is the "hardest easiest game" so to say.
The aim of the game which was developed around 1968 by Edward de Bono is to manoeuvre the opponent into a position on the board where he cannot move his L piece.
Rules / Regeln
The L game is played on a 4x4 board. There is a Red and a Blue side, each has a L-shaped tetromino. Plus there are 2 neutral pieces.
This is the starting position:Das ist die Startstellung:

Proceeding from this position, the first player (and each player on each move thereafter) must move his L piece. You may slide it, turn or pick up and flip the L piece into any open position other than the one it occupies currently. It must stay within the board and must not sit on one of the neutral pieces or on the opponents L. After the move, the player may move one (but only one) of the neutral pieces to any open square on the board. It is not required, it is up to the player if he wants to move one of them!
A player wins the game when his opponent cannot move his L piece anymore. That simple!
A position after my first move (with Red). You can see who to move due to the lighter color (I know it is annoying). I tried to move a neutral piece to reduce as many choices as possible from the opponent.

Blue to move

There are 82 possible position of the Ls and together with the 2 neutral pieces 2296 positions of the board (actually even 18368 if you account for all mirrorings and rotations) - by far not as many like in chess or Go, but enough to make you think!
E.g. in these 2 position (Blue to move) Red has won - there is no valid move for BlueZum Beispiel in diesen beiden Stellungen (Blau am Zug) hat Blau verloren, da es keinen legalen Zug für ihn gibt

Strategy / Strategie
Naturally, it is key to place the L and the neutral pieces in a way, that they occupy as much space as possible.
If you do this consequently, you can win against the computer as soon as in app. 10 moves.
But a perfect play would lead to an endless game!
There are 15 winning positions plus 14 which will lead in the next move(s) to a winning position. Just try to reach one of those in order to win 😄.Es gibt insg.
Likewise, if you are e.g. Red, you have to avoid any of these 14 positions, because with perfect play from Blue you will lose (in the below stated no. of moves)!Umgekehrt sollte man (mit Rot) diese 14 Positionen vermeiden, da sie (bei perfektem Spiel von Blau) zu Verlust führen (in der unten angegebenen Anzahl von Zügen)!

Did you ever try it out? / Hast Du es schon mal ausprobiert?

Oh my God! My brother and I used to play that, when we went at the beach. There was a very popular company here in Greece in the 1980s and 1990s that made "pocket games". It was easy to carry and kept us busy for many hours.
I had forgotten about it. Oh, the memories. Thank you for your post.

Urmmm, this is actually my very first time seeing this game but it looked similar to a few box 4x4 games out there.I will learn this and maybe share my progress so far haha. Thanks for the tips. Btw, I have no reason why I smiled here

a perfect play would lead to an endless game!

Wow! Thanks so much for this. This game is really cool. Would like to play it for sure.

There're some certain elements that can be related to chess

  • strategic thinking; the fact that it requires strategic thinking & analysis of positions & what happens after you make a move reminds me alot about chess

Also, The L shaped piece occupies 4 squares, just like the knight's movement. Lol

Oh another brain hurting game ;)

There are 82 possible position of the Ls and together with the 2 neutral pieces 2296 positions of the board (actually even 18368 if you account for all mirrorings and rotations) - by far not as many like in chess or Go, but enough to make you think!

Or to explode my brain. 😂
Good luck and have fun everyone.

Klingt interessant. Muss ich mal austesten

Nein, das kannte ich noch nicht.
Rehived.

I haven't seen this game though but it sounds very interesting to play. Seems it for the locals?

Yay! 🤗

Splinterlands sucks, it is artificial game made only to earn crypto on it, not to have fun playing it. I currently earn Ulti tokens by playing real high-class Dota 2 game.
