Choose to let go of what stresses you!

The so called worklife balance and work pressure at office have started to echo among the social media group in India. The recent death of a 26-year-old chartered accountant at Ernst and Young has sparked a social media storm. She felt uneasy and complained of exhaustion before dying at the work place. Her story is a stark reminder to prioritise health over work pressure. This is not first instance such incident has happened. I remember one of my friend too died in 2012. He was working for some ofshore transition project. We met at the evening tea had some healthy and funny conversation. We left office together, but he was not there the next days. The overstress at work took his life and left us while in sleep.

This is not the first time people are raising voice against the toxic work culture at differrnt organisation. Earlier it was the labour workforce, who were used to suppressed, but now it is going at all the differrnt levels. But still nothing has happened neither the company nor the employees are ready to accept the changes. In my opinion, there is a fault at both ends. While many employees are ready to sacrifice their peace of mind for building a strong career, the organisation too is not leaving any stone unturned to take out juice of the employees.

I have been to such situation many a times. There were times that, I was not getting proper sleep and all the day incidents and development at work keeps coming in my dreams. Those were my begining days, in order to secure a financial freedom, I was accepting all the responsibilities that came along in my way. Ultimately taking away all my "peace of mind". It was only then, my Dad pitched in to give me a support that I was looking for. He ensured that money is not everything and there is life beyond the work life. I have been in a hectic situation many a times. From 8 AM when I board my office Cabs to 11 PM when I deboard at home. The life was kind of he'll. I have distant myself from all the families and relation. Only to realize I was isolated.

The corporate culture is more of a race where everyone is competiting with one another. All they wanted is to peep ahead of others at any cost. To get success, to get recognition employees are ready to handle multiple responsibilities. Irrespective of the fact they are putting themselves at the edge of their ability. We all have certain physical and mental limits, go beyond that limit is always harmful. In the recent case, the victims mother accuses the company for excess workload, and longs hours working that led to the death within 4 months of joining.

Leave stress behind and embrace serenity.

People often talk about maintaining a worklife balance, but no one talks about managing stress and how to cope of stress. A person could be under stress but does not get time to share with anyone. There are multiple signs, of stress, from exhaustion to irritable behaviors. It is important to take note of such instances and take proper steps to fix it. Managaing stress is not a big task. Here are some ways to manage stress that I used to follow.

  • Taking short breaks at office. Stepping away from mobile and computer screens helps to focus more and help us the brain to relax.

  • Taking control over our diet and focus of mindful life style. Eating healthy, regular exercise, and getting enough sleep.

  • Practicing relaxation through desk exercises.Trying deep breathing, a little stretching helps a lot to free muscles and keeping us fresh.

  • Setting limits and boundary for our work. Making sire not to take addiotnal burden untill, the first one get over.

  • Going out for holidays far away from regular place. It helps to rejuvenate mind and body.

In case these steps dpes not help and if stress persist and a person is struggling to manage on their own, consider counseling or other professional services.

Many companies nowadays comes up with recreational facilities. Just to fill the rule book and complying with labour policy. However, when it comes to employee satisfaction, the employer always get stricter. Even though the employee are providing with all the results. These are common work culture prevailing in India. When management see person taking a regular break they assume that the employee have enough spare time, either they fire them, or overload them with addional. responsibility.

In all these years, I observe that the job insecurity at the private sector, forcing the employe not to say NO, and ultimately paying heavenly with their life and mental peace. It is upto an employee to set their limit and work accordingly. Even they achive little, they must remain happy.

Peace !!
