History, food and a boat crash in Amsterdam

in #amsterdam2 years ago

I am back now from Amsterdam. I did a post after our first day, but thought I would wait before posting more as doing it from my phone can be hard work.

Canal

This stretch had a fair few new buildings. The old ones can be about 400 years old and many have suffered from subsidence or perhaps war damage. A standard feature is a hook at the top to get large items such as furniture to the upper floors. New buildings often have this too. The local taxes charged by house width, so they tended to build upwards with narrow stairs. You can see the weather was good.

Boats

Boats are everywhere and there are some vintage specimens around the harbour. This was near the science museum. We did not go in, but we climbed the steps up to the roof to enjoy the view.

Steps

I did not see as much graffiti as in some other cities, but it is around. There was even some in the metro tunnels. There are also stickers everywhere.

Stickers

I had done a canal tour during Hivefest, but my wife wanted to do one too. The tour was great with lots of fun information about the city. The driver said we were safe with him as he had done this for many years. On the way back he turned a corner and had to pass under another bridge. These are not very high and I thought he was cutting it very close. Then there was a big crunch as the corner of the window hit the bricks. The front windows shattered and the canopy frame bent in several places.

Broken boat

Nobody was hurt, but some drinks were spilled. It looked like repairs would be expensive.

Oude Kerk

Our B&B host recommended a visit to The Oude Kerk (the old church) which dates back about 800 years. It is huge and very impressive. The vast floor is covered by thousands of tombs. There was an art exhibit called garden of scars. It had loads of casts of tombs from there as well as from dutch forts in Ghana where slaves were traded. The bats hanging from the beams are part of the artwork.

We also visited the Anne Frank House. Photography is not allowed inside, but it was a very personal experience. We must not forget the horrors of history.

Dinner was at The Golden Temple.

Dinner

We had some slight issues with the meal, but those could be put down to personal preference. The vegetable tikka masala I had was a little spicy for my taste, but I was able to eat it. My wife had a mushroom pizza. It did have truffle oil on it and she found it a bit too much for her taste. My beer was a Gulpener organic pilsner that was fine.

Cat

The resident cat was not bothered by all the people.

There are so many great places to eat there. You're never really too far away from anything.

Always good when you get the munchies :) We were spoilt for choice really. Had some frites too of course. It's a very walkable city and we like exploring. We may go back some time.

Nice pics. It looks like a nice holiday away, and that feast at the golden temple looks large enough to fulfil the biggest case of the munchies 😉

Jokes, of course.

Although tbh, it sounds like if anyone had been dabbling in Amsterdam's herbal cafes or was ur boat driver 😂

All jokes aside, i hope you had a, fun trip.

The local drug culture can be seen and smelled everywhere, but we did not indulge. I expect the boat driver will be checked on. I don't think this happens too often.

It did not spoil our trip and I have more to report. It needs a few posts to cover everything.

Ahh, good to hear there's more posts to come. And as to the drug culture, well its part and parcel of the place. I found all that fascinating in my misspent youth, but last time i visited 'the dam' i visited only restaurants, museums and the surprisingly fantastic botanic gardens 🌿

Look forward to seeing more posts about your Amsterdam trip.

I've heard they are trying to cope with some of the disruption the drugs cause. I respect their laid back attitude, but people have to actually live there.

Looks like you had an awesome time! I am glad you were able to get back to Amsterdam. It must be nice having so much history so close to you.

Europe is just full of interesting history. We like to check it out and it's pretty easy to get there on the train.

This seems like such a great jourey, I'm glad your wife got to go after your enjoyable Hive visit. That's funny/scary abut the boat crash, but I suppose it'll make for good stories to tell over dinners for while :)

That food looks delish.

I love an old feeling waterfront, really great voyage it seems @steevc

It's a great place for photographers, even an amateur like me. We loved it and the boat incident didn't spoil it.

Glad nobody was hurt on the boat, how ironic when he said everything will be fine! Amsterdam is definitely on our list. Easy to get to. Hope your train trip back was ok?

You'll have to wait for the next post...

Sounds intriguing!

I hope you enjoyed amsterdam. I also found amsterdam very interesting and will come back in the summer with my wife. The anne frank house is also on our list.

You do need to book for some things, including Anne Frank, as they are so popular. We had a great time.

Looks like you had a great trip..
Some seriously good pics.

Might take a bike trip out there next year..

If you make it back from that other epic one.. 😉

It's not too far to go. Lots of places to explore around Europe. Just be careful around town as the cycle traffic is manic.

Dont worry you are safe with me...famous last words....all the sudden hit a wall "..... It looked like repairs would be expensive." , food look great, thx for sharing ✌️

Nice shots... Looks lik a cool place to visit. The floor of tombs is quite interesting. They'd be pretty old, I would imagine ??

Those tombs go back hundreds of years, but in some cases they got re-used. The old bones would be put elsewhere. Some had fancy carvings, but others were just initials. You could show your status even after you died.
