About four years ago I was living in a third floor apartment in my beachside home village of Muizenberg. One afternoon I happened to be busy in my bedroom which had a large glass sliding doors & windows configuration providing a view towards the beach and the further extending bay called False Bay.

2.jpg

All of a sudden all the glass panes rattled as though I was at a music concert back in my younger years, then the building literally shook followed by a loud roar coming by level with the open view of my bedroom.

4.jpg

A few seconds later a continuous rat a tat a tat, boom boom blasted for a few continuous minutes. (Not even my irritating neighbour in those days played such crap music through the night,)

1.jpg

Within the first second of this all happening a deeply buried, trained, instinct/ disturbance from the bush war 26 years earlier had smashed a split second awakening from those hidden inside depths and I went flying to the floor with laundry in my hands sprawling in every direction.

6.jpg

After a few seconds all I could think was what the fuck you mudderfokkers, we are not at war in my beachside village. If I had wings on my back then I would fly up and give you a bullocksing in language that you would never want your Mother in Law to hear!
The rat a tat boom ended up being large calibre repetitive weapon fire etc,

A couple of hours later I found out that the dam defence force was planning to do a live public display at the beach in a few days time and that they would be practising for it over the following couple of days.

After getting through the first few runs I decided.... "right you mudders, I am going to try shoot you down with my camera in my amateur pottography way (someone that potters with a camera.....a word brilliantly invented by @dreemsteem here on hive) ."

These were a few of the photo results

There is no glory in war.
Those that find enjoyment in war have never been to war.

😂 The swear words that I used for them were mostly in Afrikaans…..far more descriptive & meaningful than English 😂😂

"There is no glory in war. Those that find enjoyment in war have never been to war."
Very well said. It's what happens when people watch too much TV.

Thanks @soltecno and that is so true about the tv & social media warriors.

Those that find enjoyment in war have never been to war.

So very true.

I am sorry. I do not know what else to say but thank you for sharing your story with me this day.

And Thank you for giving your life to serve.

HUGS!

Thanks so much and what you have said means the world.

!LOVE

I live with CPTSD and really felt it when you said you flew to the floor. These unexpected triggers are very blindsiding for us. Thanks for sharing so vulnerably. 🙌🏻🙌🏻

Thanks for that @centarficus and is not pleasant when the buried brain takes control of logic like that………..strongs 🤗

Phenomenal photos! Really made me think of my flight in the Huey!

Ahh, thanks so much @clairemobey and can totally imagine how amazing the Huey flight must have been,
My first amazing helicopter experience was in a large double side doorless Puma over Touwsriver where we were training as an 18 year old.

Full backpack and weird configuration strapping, holding gear, around the body and your "wife' (rifle) clasped beyond tight and told to mount up.

The "air host" guided us to our "first class seats" Four side by side in each doorway sitting cross legged on the metal floor on the edge open the doorless openings. No "seatbelts or strapping" to hold one in and both hands fixed on your "wife" so no chance of holding on to anything even if there had been something to grab. Erm, okay....let's go I thought.

Liftoff and it actually felt pretty cool I thought.....

Suddenly the "sadistic" pilot hit a 45 degree sharp turn and four of us were left looking eyes forward at mother earth while the four in the opposite door were looking directly up to the heavens.

I think I invented 100 spirits to pray to in that instant and almost poeped in my brown pant.

Afterwards the buggers explained that the G-force keeps one in place and we didn't budge an inch. Thanks Larry I thought....you could have warned us beforehand. lol.

I think those flights ended up being my best experiences over those couple of years :)

Ooooooooh that all sounds far too familiar!
