Ice on the shore of Lake Dunmore with Mount Moosalamoo in the distance.
Today's #wednesdaywalk (hosted by @tattoodjay ) is a science walk.
The sheet of ice that forms on the lake exerts incredible pressure on the shore. There is an excellent description of ice berms in this article ice berms explained
Lots of stuff going on in this picture... doesn't really move my narrative forward but I liked the picture 😊
I walked along this lovely trail today which led to my interest in learning more about ice berms. This trail is created by the ice on the lake!
You can see in this picture how the ice has pushed up this berm over time creating a nice walkway 🙂 I always thought these trails along the shore of lakes were man-made or at the very least made by lots of foot traffic over the years. They are actually a berm pushed up by the ice over time.
The great thing about trails along the lake are the great views. There is a small island in the middle of the lake. I haven't been out on the ice this year and might have missed my chance because it was 60F yesterday 🙄
