In Italy, among the many problems that afflict this nation, we have one that we always clash with at this time of year: the August holidays.
Italy has traditionally aligned itself so that all companies, activities, jobs and offices, stop in the period at the turn of Ferragosto (August 15) to go on vacation.
This involves quite a few misunderstandings, both for those who go on vacation, and for those who work in the hospitality sector (hotels, bars, restaurants, etc).
Those who finally manage to go on vacation find any holiday resort in these conditions:
high prices;
overcrowding;
queues and slowdowns to reach vacation spots.
Those who work in the hospitality branch find having to cope with a peak of demand that leads to:
stress;
gruelling work shifts;
invasion of the places where they usually live by holidaymers.
There is also a cross-cutting problem: the production companies often block the lines during August and take advantage of them to do maintenance, with the result that the companies that take care of it receive intervention calls all concentrated in the same period.
Is it possible that there is no solution? I had thought of one, but I always believed it had some gap that I couldn't see, this until today when a colleague explained to me that in Germany they do exactly as I had thought.
In fact, there the closures take place for Land (similar to our regions) and are distributed over a period from the beginning of July to the end of September. Alternating.
In this way they are much more distributed, ensuring a longer and dosed mid/high season period.
Think if in rotation, our regions provided for the closures one year the first two of July, then the year after the second two, then the year after still the first two of August and then the last two of August. And then start over.
And all staggered. With 20 regions, we would only have the population of a quarter of Italy on vacation at any given time.
That wouldn't be bad, would it?
Of course, initially there would be some resistance, but I believe that as soon as the benefits are seen, everyone would fit willingly.

L’Italia si è tradizionalmente allineata affinché tutte le aziende, attività, lavori e uffici, si fermino nel periodo a cavallo di Ferragosto (il 15 di Agosto) per andare in ferie.
Questo comporta non pochi disguidi, sia per chi va in vacanza, sia per chi lavora nel settore della accoglienza (alberghi, bar, ristoranti, etc).
Chi finalmente riesce ad andare in ferie trova qualsiasi luogo di villeggiatura in queste condizioni:
- prezzi elevati;
- sovraffollamento;
- code e rallentamenti per raggiungere i luoghi di vacanza.
Chi invece lavora nel ramo accoglienza, trova a dover far fronte ad un picco di domanda che porta a: - stress;
- turni di lavoro massacranti;
- invasione dei posti dove solitamente vivono da parte dei villeggianti.
C’è anche un problema trasversale: le aziende produttive spesso bloccano le linee durante Agosto e ne approfittano per fare manutenzione, con il risultato che le aziende che se ne occupano ricevono chiamate di intervento tutte concentrate nello stesso periodo.
Possibile che non ci sia una soluzione? Io ne avevo pensata una, ma ho sempre creduto avesse qualche lacuna che non riuscivo a vedere, questo fino ad oggi quando un collega mi ha spiegato che in Germania fanno esattamente come avevo pensato io.
Lì infatti le chiusure avvengono per Land (simili alle nostre regioni) e si distribuiscono in un periodo che va da inizio Luglio a fine Settembre. Alternandosi.
In questo modo sono molto più distribuiti, garantendo un periodo di media/alta stagione più lungo e dosato.
Pensate se a rotazione, le nostre regioni prevedessero le chiusure un anno le prime due di Luglio, poi l’anno dopo le seconde due, poi l’anno dopo ancora le prime due di Agosto e poi le ultime due di Agosto. Per poi ricominciare.
E tutte sfalsate. Con 20 regioni, avremmo solo la popolazione di un quarto dell’Italia in ferie in un dato momento.
Non sarebbe male, no?
Certo, inizialmente ci sarebbe un po’ di resistenza, ma credo che appena visti i benefici, tutti si adatterebbero di buon grado.
