Now, last week, I started a motivation post about a man of value. I wrote episode one last week and I posted it on Gem community. I titled the first episode "Everything of value requires time". In the post, I gave about three guidelines that can be of help when you are frustrated and tired of the process. The guidelines are:

  1. When you are tired of the process, be patient with yourself.
  2. When you are tired the process, don't give up, keep growing.
  3. When you are tired of the process, be accountable to someone.

You can visit the episode one and read more about it. It has blessed people, and I believe it will do the same for you. See the link below.

Today, I'm going to continue with the second episode. And I have titled this episode as "Humility: An Elevator to high places." I want to share this important topic with you, and I want you to follow me wholeheartedly. I implore you to go and read the episode one if you have not read it. Make sure you find a comfortable place where you can enjoy reading this. Now, let's get started.

Humility: An Elevator to High Places

Ten years ago, my brother and I wanted to proceed to college and entrance exam to college was mandatory. We needed to write the exam because it was part of the requirements for admission to the higher institution we had chosen. A day before the exam, the Consultant who helped us with the registration put a call through and asked us to come and collect some documents which we needed to take along.

On getting to his place, we met him sitting at his sitting room. He warmly welcomed us and offered us a seat. "You are welcome my brothers", he said. We responded with "thank you so much sir". After the welcome greetings, he encouraged us not to be panic for the exams we are going for, that we should be confident and courageous. He talked at length that day. When it was time to handle the documents to us. He said, "I will like you guys to do something for me". "What is it, Sir", we responded. He said, "You will help me to collect a document from someone in Ibadan and give to Miss T in Ogbomoso." "No problem, sir. We will help collect it" we replied. He gave us directives on how to go about it. We left his place for our house.

The next day, we woke up early to prepare for the journey. We took our bath, prayed and left the house for a motor park that's very close to us where we will take a bus going to where we were going. But then, we remembered that we had already promised our Consultant that we would help collect a document in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State. Actually, we were going to Ogbomoso which is also one of the largest cities in the state. So, we decided that someone should go to Ibadan and meet the other person in Ogbomoso so as to save some monies. So, my brother went to Ibadan and I, to Ogbomoso.

According to my brother, before he reached Ibadan, it was late already. And he had to collect this document because without it, Miss T can't be allowed to enter the exam hall. So, he had to move in the city of Ibadan, and of course you know how the capital city is always busy. Traffic problems. Eventually, he was able to collect the documents. But then, it was already in the evening that the traffic was very bad... At that time, he needed to find his way to the motor park so he could take a bus going to Ogbomoso that same evening. Ibadan to Ogbomoso is one of the deadly roads in Nigeria, so people don't normally want to travel in the night.

Before my brother could get the motor park, it was very, very late. There was no bus going from Ibadan to Ogbomoso that day again. He was stranded and began to think of what he could do. He needed to get to Ogbomoso that day because our entrance exams was in the next morning. As he was thinking at the motor park, he noticed a car which seemed to be going to Ogbomoso at one side of the motor park. He moved closer and asked, "is the car going to Ogbomoso?". "Yes, but it's not for public. It has been booked by a family", the driver replied him.

As he heard this from the driver, he noticed a woman who was sitting in the car. He moved to and asked her if he could join the car. "Are you going for the LAUTECH entrance exam", the woman asked my brother. "Yes, ma... I have exam tomorrow morning and I ought to be in Ogbomoso today", he responded. The woman told him that the car was booked by her and that there's no space that could contain him. "However, if you can sit on my lap", the woman said. By that time, my brother and I were about 2 decades old. My brother didn't want to sir on her lap because he thought he was old enough. But then, he still thought, if he didn't find any means to get to Ogbomoso, he will lose the exam. So, he humbly agreed to the woman's offer.

Some minutes after he entered into the car, they started talking about his education. The woman asked if he has done any entrance exam before. Prior to that time, my brother and I had gone for FUTA entrance exam which we were not selected for admission. He told her of the FUTA entrance exams and the result. "Okay, the Lord will make that of LAUTECH's one work out", the woman responded prayerfully. "Amen, Amen.... he answered. She continued the conversation. "I have a brother in LAUTECH. I will give you his contact; go to him and tell him that you are from me after your exams". My brother told me of how he inconvenient the woman by sitting on her lap until they got to Ogbomoso. They exchanged their contacts and parted. My brother went straight and dropped the document he had gone to collect in Ibadan for Miss T. After dropping it, he came to where we lodged. I was happy that he eventually made it. I asked about the journey and he told me everything.

The next morning, the day of the exams. We had woken up early, did a short devotion and started preparing. About 1 hour to the exams, we left home for the exams venue. They posted us to different venues and so we had to part way so each person can locate his own venue. It didn't take long time before I could locate my venue, but his venue was a bit far. So, we did the exams and was believing God for good results. It was a paper based test, so it took a week before the result came out. When we heard that the result was out, we quickly checked it, and we both entered cut off for the admission.

Meeting the cut off for admission was not a guarantee for admission. Getting admission to LAUTECH was very competitive during that time. It was like recommendation or connection. If you don't know anybody then, you may not easily get admitted, unless you score very high. But we didn't score very high like that. We only passed a bit above the cut off. Then, my brother remembered the woman whom he has sat on her lap while coming from Ibadan to Ogbomoso a day before the exam has given him her brother's contact. So he went to him, told the man that he wass from so so person and gave him our results and some documents. The man assured him that since we have met the cut off, our names will be selected for admission.

LAUTECH usually released three admission lists, the first list, second list and supplementary list. Few weeks after the result came out, they released the first list. We were told to check for our names, but our names wasn't in the list. Oops! None of our names was there. The man said, he submitted our names, and he didn't know why it wasn't there. We prayed and kept trusting God. Then, the second list came. My name was there, but my brother's name wasn't. Again, we called the man. He said the two names supposed to be there that he didn't know why the second name wasn't there. We still prayed. I was already preparing for resumption.... My brother was waiting for the last list, supplementary list which is a list that normally contains few names. The man told my brother to wait for the list.

I was already in school when my brother called me on phone that his name was on the supplementary list. I was very happy that day. He too prepared and came to join us in school. We already started lectures before he came... He had to cover up and copy the notes.

Now, let me tell you that, it was by grace that we got admission. It was his humility that paved way for us. The person our Consultant asked to give the document to is like a younger sister to us. We could have told the Consultant that the young lady should go and collect her document in Ibadan herself. But humility would not allow us do that. We had to decide whether we will go and subdue the pride or let the pride swallow us. Because we thought how would he ask us to go and collect a document for someone whom we are older than.

It was humility that made my brother to sit on that woman's lap. Some people can not do that... They will want to proof level. And of course, many of those that want to proof level don't really have anything. True great men are humble persons. I wonder, if my brother had not humbled himself, we would not have had the connection we had. It was his humility that led to getting admission at that institution. Can you see that, there's nothing- absolutely nothing- you can't achieve if you are humble enough. Doors of greater opportunities are always opened for humble people. Be doing what you are doing and remain humble and you will see doors of opportunities open for you.
