The Death of Legacy Media

Donald Trump did it.

No. This is not referring to his election win. In fact, Trump is simply a participant in a much larger trend.

Kamala Harris was not the biggest loser this election season. That title goes to legacy media.

For the past few years, we covered Hollywood and the decline. Much of the content focuses upon the movie studios but we cannot leave aside the television networks. The corporate parents are having to write down billions as these assets are basically dying off.

Could have have just seen the last nail in the coffin?

The Death of Legacy Media

Have you noticed the latest round of attacks? We are now seeing the calls for crackdowns on social media, especially YouTube, of these channels that spread disinformation. Isn't that a hoot considering it was the mainstream media that swore the Biden laptop didn't exist and the Russian interference hoax was real.

These spent untold hours on these two stories.

Of course, the average person doesn't have the time or inclination to dive into topics of this nature. This is why the media was able to hang on. It often takes people a while to figure out they are being lied to.

Once that happens, trust goes out the window.

This is a Gallup poll taken a couple months ago.

The United States Congress is known for having very low approval ratings. However, as we can see, the legacy media is trusted LESS than Congress. A bunch of politicians are trusted more than the mainstream media (news) outlets.

No wonder Jeff Bezos made the decision he did and called out his people at the Washington post for the inability to post anything more than propaganda.

Polls Wrong

Even on Election day, the media was touting how Harris was going to win. They pointed out what the polls were saying.

The problem is these outlets all believed their own nonsense. By this I mean, Disney was the one promoting the narrative. That company owns 538, the polling site that offers a weighting of all the polls. Wikipedia does a good job of explaining the methods.

Here is the problem. They kicked pollsters that they disagreed with out. Rasmussen is one such example.

So, in other words, the polling is just another tool used to promote the narrative.

Obviously, it did not work.

Dead In Four Years

Legacy media is in a death roll.

We have highlighted the rapid decline in the past 14 months since the writers and actors strikes for Hollywood. That was less than 450 days ago and we are seeing massive carnage in that sector of the industry. California is looking for ways to shore up the Los Angeles area since so much business is being lost.

With television, they are likely to unleash another wave from which they will not recover.

Once trust is gone, it is difficult to regain it. This is something about humans. If the boss lies to you, promising a promotion if you do certain things, then gives the job to someone else, trust is gone. Many of us has this in our lives.

My guess is the legacy media will be even more irrelevant during the next election cycle. They were fully exposed during this term, something that only enhances the overwhelming trend.

Not mentioned is the fact that cable news viewers are dying....literally. This is a Baby Boomer audience. By the next US Presidential election, the oldest Boomer will be 82 (the youngest will be 64). There are almost 6,000 of them dying each day. At that pace, they will lose roughly 8.5 million people. Considering there are 55 million today, that is a significant hit.

Then we have all the other options.

We have not even seen the introduction of Web 3.0, yet legacy media is reeling. Once that gets going, the ability to compete will be impossible. What progress is done over the next four years remains to be seen. However, simply by looking at the cord cutting statistics, we see many are turning away from traditional television.

The politics will ebb and flow. Throughout the world, we see the move right, then left, and then back right again.

What is not going to come back is legacy media. Their challenges are only mounting, reflecting the underlying technological disruption.

The trend was in place for the media. We saw the fragmentation of the media started a long time ago. It is now accelerating as video gets easier to deal with.

Cut cable in 2013 and haven't looked back! Mobile and WiFi is all I need (and a few logins from my friends).

Certainly. I am curious as to how we see Cord Cutting 2.0 going. I have to make a decision about my Internet service. Time to make a change I believe. They are bleeding me dry.

You thinking about Starlink? I've definitely been considering it so I can leave all the legacy providers behind. Musk has a knack for providing future technology to the market and Starlink seems like a great way to sure up one of my most basic 21st century needs -- internet connectivity.
