In the morning, I looked out the window and saw that the courtyard was covered with snow. A pure white blanket of snow covered the lawns and walkways, hiding cars and benches. It all looked very attractive - clean, white, fresh! Immediately after breakfast I hurried to get dressed and go for a walk.
In reality it was not as beautiful and pleasant as the picture from the window. It had been snowing for almost 24 hours, and the height of the snow cover in the morning was more than 10 centimetres. Or rather, it would have been - if the temperature had not fluctuated around zero, and the falling snow would not have melted. But in reality, the untouched snow remained untouched only where there were no passers-by or car traffic. In the city streets, the snow very quickly turned into snow mush under the wheels of cars, and on the pavements the melted snow was covered with a crust of ice.
I decided to take a little walk in the park near the Admiralty. We had warm spring weather before the snowfall started, and there are scooters and bicycles on duty in the park waiting for people who want to ride. For some reason the companies did not remove the scooters during the snowfall, although such weather is hardly conducive to their good performance. The fountain in front of the Admiralty is ready to work, but the fountain bowl is covered with snow.
Busts and monuments in the Alexander Garden are decorated with snow caps. The monument to the poet Vasily Zhukovsky also got a white snow collar. A flowerbed with flowers was completely covered with snow. How will the flowers survive this caprice of weather?
Most likely, this was the last snowfall of this spring, and the next time I will see the same white scenery will be not earlier than in six months. So I didn't hurry home, and continued my walk. I started my walk near the fountain, and further on I walked towards Palace Square. Usually the alleys of the Alexander Garden are quite a busy place, but the weather scared away the people who wanted to walk, and the park was not crowded. Then I crossed the bridge over the Neva River and walked around Vasilyevsky Island some more, trying to choose quiet streets with few people and cars.
