A Boxing Day Sublime and Beautiful Sunday Post
This post is for #SublimeSunday is inspired by @c0ff33a and #BeautifulSunday is initiated by @ace108.
For this week I will share a few shots of flowers I got during the year, but first let me touch on the title of this post ie.
#Boxing day
Boxing day is the day after Christmas, or at least that's what we called it in New Zealand when I was growing up and it used to be a holiday as well, but I don't think it is known that well here in the United states, so I thought I would talk about it a little.
And if your thinking its do with the squared ring and boxing gloves, nope its nothing to do with that no fisticuffs involved LOL
I have heard different stories about it, such as boxing up gifts that one may want to exchange for something else being one of them, but I did some research on it a few years ago and believe the real basis of the custom is linked to an older ( even older than me) British tradition where the servants of the wealthy ( again definitely not me) were given the day after Christmas off to visit their families since they would have had to serve their masters on Christmas Day.
The employers would give each servant a box to take home containing gifts, bonuses, and sometimes leftover food.
And I think that spilled over to recent times to the tradition of giving a gift or cash to some people who work for you in one way or another, such as the Postie/Mail deliver person, and even to the practice in some companies to give Christmas Bonuses to staff.
But that all said what do I remember most about Boxing day when I was growing up, well bear in mind in New Zealand Christmas is in the middle of summer, and we would often celebrate it with family time playing outdoors, or a visit to the beach or a river for a nice day in the sun and the water, I think Boxing day could well have been one of the busiest beach days back then, I wonder if it still is?
