Palmers Island Lighthouse

On my Wednesday Walk post I mentioned heading out onto Palmers Island to see if I could sight and get some shots of any Osprey, it was also a chance to get some ew shots of the Palmers Island lighthouse from a different perspective and that's what I will be sharing in this post.
Starting with a shot closer to the lighthouse when I walked around the Island to get to this point.

I had been to the Island once before with my wife, but we didn't realize at the time that you could walk around the edge of the Island to get to this point

I wanted to start with the closer in shot of the lighthouse so now backtracking to earlier on my walk and a spot on the island with the lighthouse in view

Now a little about the lighthouse, it was built on the northern point of the island for $1,951 by Charles M. Pierce, a mason.
Can you imagine how much it would cost to build something similar these days

Now I mentioned the island which is Palmers Island which I will share a shot of in a future post and talk about for this post I am focusing on the Lighthouse.

It was first lighted on August 30, 1849, by William Sherman who was the keeper. The 24-foot tower was built of rubblestone, with wooden windows and floors.

As with many lighthouses in that era the lamps were fueled by New Bedford whale oil
Over the years the lighthouse suffered from vandalism, but was eventually bought by the City of New Bedford and they restored it including relighting it in 1999

Another spot on the island a little closer to the lighthouse

As you can see the lighthouse still remains but some other buildings buildings including a keeper's dwelling and an enclosed walkway (1849), a fog signal building (1900) and an oil house (1905) were destroyed by the Hurricane of 1938., which in part led to building the Hurricane barrier wall which was built in 1963

as I mentioned on my walk post I didn't have any lucky with seeing the Osprey, you see the empty nest here, but it was a nice walk around the island

and a last shot to finish off the post

So lovely we are lucky with our beautiful lighthouses in MA and no I can't imagine the costs to do this today. I can barely believe the costs at the market haha let alone a mason built light house. I hope you have a good day enjoy the rain today @tattoodjay

Ohh yeah not to many visits to the market would add up to the cost of the lighthouse when built !LOLZ
I plan to travel and catch a few of the other lighthouses around here

I could get in trouble for stealing from the kitchen supply store
But that’s a whisk I’m willing to take.

Great subject today for photos. Nice looking old lighthouse. Thanks for the history. I like the first shot with the city and docks in the background plus the gull 🙂

Thanks and yes the gull in that shot was a nice bonus :)

This lighthouse is the historical remains of past, which has to tell us something about future times.
Nice to know that the city has purchased the rights of the tower and saved its heritage.
Photo are really impressive with different angles.

Thanks so much, I do love that the city here has made great efforts to keep historic buildings such as this lighthouse preserved

Interesting subject and history @tattoodjay

I'm sorry, I know a photographer would comment about the f-stoppages and shutter angles and all...I don't know what that means so nice will have to do.

You comment was very nice no need to worry about camera settings :)

I think it’s all about saying what a post or photo makes you feel 😎

Oh yes, I agree completely. 🙃

A very beautiful sky.
Interesting the lighthouse, it caught my attention, very imposing.

Never seen a lighthouse in real life but only in movies and somehow this tower always fascinated me ❤️

I love lighthouses there is many around here I want to go and visit some more of them

Building has gone wild with $$ once again. I cannot even imagine how much it would cost!

Have the ospreys come back yet? It is so exciting to see them!

I havent seen them by the lighthouse but I have at other Osprey nests in the area
