β¦ This post is a collaboration where I share the creative process of a friend and her fabulous results, I am very proud of her and I am happy to have provided a little guidance in the distance, since we do not live close to each other - Collage & Edition in FotoJet-CapCut, photo by @Tesmoforia, @NuryCos - Img MalΓ©fica β¦
πΊπΈ ~ A few weeks ago, my friend cosplayer @NuryCos had the opportunity to portray Maleficent, the great thing about this anecdote is that she decided to make the costume with the help of her mom, but they had a very limited time to get everything done; So she asked me if I could help her remotely with some instructions, and I was super happy to accept the challenge (and I say challenge, because explaining how to make something in person is one thing, and doing it remotely without being able to take the person's measurements is another), I learned a lot in the process.
β¦ We all love villains. We love them even more when they have these fabulous sleeves β¦
(β§ β½ β¦) /
At the end of this nice experience I made a compilation of a part of the material we used via WhatsApp to understand each other, and hopefully it will be useful for anyone who also wants to make this suit from scratch, but in a simplified and effective way, GO! (β§ β½ β¦) /
The issue with this project is that Maleficent's dress is not fitted to the body, but Nury wanted it a bit fitted to give it a clockwork shape to the body, and of course without forgetting the prominence and drama of those sleeves; the energies then focused on: 1. "How to cut the dress to achieve that silhouette but without making darts?", 2. "And how and in what sense to cut the fabric already purchased to get the dress in a few pieces?."
β¦ Start by making sketches of different cutting options for the dress pieces. In this options the dress would be composed of 4 parts (8 in total) β¦
β¦ In this second option the whole dress is cut in one part (it is my favorite proposal but it consumes about 3 to 3.5 meters of fabric) β¦
β¦ Here I drew cut options for the purple inner sleeve, and a very basic pleated underskirt option β¦
β¦ When the drawing is outlined and clean, you can better appreciate what I am trying to say, note that this option does not need tweezers, but the fabric should be a little bit thicker than the one I am trying to say β¦
Something I really liked about that day was that it had been a long time since I had drawn patterns of this kind, that is, the kind where you cut out the miniature paper figures and experiment to see if it fits correctly before moving on to the fabric, although I had to think a lot about it, but Nury is extremely kind and patient, so we came to these conclusions without a problem:
β¦ This option was ruled out because you'd need a fairly large extra piece of fabric. So sacrificing a little skirt drama wasn't too bad β¦
β¦ This option is the winner because you literally just have to spread the fabric on the floor, and the size you need is just the size you need: The width of your hip, your height, and the distance from your neck to your wrist β¦
β¦ Here it seems that the pattern does not match, but it does, because the end of the sleeve that faces your body is curved, not straight, and in that curve it fits perfectly with the line of the skirt β¦
β¦ Instead of adding red pleated fabric to the black dress, a very good option is to leave the side slits open and wear a separate skirt underneath, no one will notice the difference and the walking effect is great β¦
β¦ For the purple background of the sleeve we will make a fake sleeve, on the right side of the drawing you can see how it will be cut in the fabric and on the left side how it will look folded in half. It will be sewn in at shoulder level before the dress is closed β¦
β¦ Here you can see on the left the first cut of the fabric and on the right how to make the cuts of the "flames" of the sleeves β¦
β¦ And a summary of the next 2 pieces to be created. That is, your process for creating this suit will be the last 2 images in this lot β¦
For a better understanding, here are some excerpts from the explanatory videos we made during that day:
But I know you must be wondering, "what did the project look like in the end, what happened, was it completed? ", of course it was, here are some pictures courtesy of Nury.

What did we learn at the end of this mini adventure: "Yes, it is possible to mentor a creative process remotely." Although it will always depend on the commitment of the person doing it and the quality of communication, and I think Nury JieJie did a great job being so persistent in her goals and I can't wait to see all the cool things I know she will do in the future π« π β¨
β¦ In all your versions, we all love you, Maleficent β¦
