Life in the field has always brought surprises and challenges, especially for me who has never been in the environment of sowing and hard work in this aspect. Despite this, there are moments that take us out of our comfort zone and put us to the test. One of those unforgettable days was when, after receiving a tip-off from a neighbour, we decided to check our cassava field. The picture we were presented with was devastating: our plants, which days before had looked green and healthy, were completely infested with worms.
Habían transcurrido dos días desde que nos alertaron sobre el problema y, lamentablemente, qué mal momento elegimos para actuar. Al llegar, nos encontramos con un panorama desolador. Las hojas de la yuca estaban casi desaparecidas, y los tallos comenzaron a quebrarse, gracias a los gusanos que se habían anidado en su interior. Two days had passed since we were alerted to the problem and, unfortunately, what a bad time we chose to act. When we arrived, we were met with a bleak sight. The cassava leaves were almost gone, and the stalks were beginning to break, thanks to the worms that had nested inside them. It was like a battlefield that had been taken over by an unexpected invader.
Los gusanos eran de lo más variado y asquerosos, para mí. Había unos color morrón con anaranjado, otros en un tono rojo intenso, y algunos de un verde brillante con tonos amarillos. The worms were the most varied and disgusting, to me. Some were brown with orange, some were a deep red, and some were bright green with shades of yellow. One of the most curious was the one that seemed to have all the combinations of colours; a sort of rainbow that, if it weren't for the damage they caused, could have been a luxury to behold for someone who is a very, very big lover of animals and nature, I don't go so far as to love insects, bugs and worms. Then there were the deep black worms, dark intruders in our planting that seemed to mock our effort and dedication.

Faced with this situation, we plucked up our courage and took matters into our own hands. The task of getting rid of them turned out to be more complicated than we had anticipated. Despite intensive spraying, up to four times, the worms seemed to have a resistance of their own. Every time we thought we had the situation under control, they would reappear, as if multiplying in the dark of night.

One of the most difficult lessons was to see the impact the infestation problem had on neighbouring farms that did not choose to act. The lack of spraying on their land allowed the worms to reproduce easily and our problem was prolonged even further. No one was safe; we were all part of an interconnected ecosystem, and while it was discouraging on the one hand, it made us reflect on the importance of teamwork and collaboration in our rural communities.
