In 1505 Juan de Bermudez was the first European to discover Bermuda. No one lived on the islands and it was of little interest at the time. On a return trip in 1515 de Bermudez released pigs on the island in case anyone ever happened to get shipwrecked there they would have some means to survive. As it happened that's exactly what happened in 1609 when a caravan of English ships were carrying supplies to a new settlement, Jamestown, in the new world. The ships ran into a hurricane and the ship Sea Venture fell behind and was smashed into the reefs of Bermuda.
The stranded crew and passengers spent the next ten months scavenging the wreck and building two new and much smaller ships to continue the journey to Jamestown. The pigs served to help them survive as they built the vessels. The new ships were named Patience and Deliverance. They filled them with supplies and pigs and arrived in the new world a couple weeks later with the much needed supplies.
This coins commemorates the founding of Bermuda in 1609 on the 350th anniversary. It has the likeness of a much younger Queen Elizabeth II and the ships Patience and Deliverance on the ocean waves with a map of the Bermuda islands as well. And believe it or not I have never made it to Bermuda!
from Numista.com
It's a beautiful coin made with 92.5% silver (sterling.) The total mintage on the coin was limited to 100,000, so it's not rare by any means. While I don't own many coins from Bermuda, this is my favorite of the few. Although it has a little oxidation it's still a real gorgeous coin! It's a great collector's item and for silver stackers alike as they aren't usually really expensive unless they are highly graded by PCGS.
Replica of the Deliverance from https://bodaciousdreamexpeditions.com
The Patience and Deliverance were very small and cramped ships. The headroom was only five feet and to get around the crew and passengers mostly had to crawl. Two ships were produced because there was not way to fit all the people and supplies in one boat. By the time they arrived in Jamestown disease and starvation had reduced the population from 200 down to 60 people. They were very grateful to receive the badly needed supplies.
You can see the in above replica of the Deliverance just how small these ships were. But they were highly motivated to not remain castaways on Bermuda so they built what they could from shipwreck salvage and the trees found on the island. The human spirit and it's finest!
That will be it for my post today, I hope you enjoyed it! Maybe one of these days I'll make it to Bermuda, it's supposed to be really nice... If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions please feel free to leave them below. Thanks for all your support and taking the time to stop by!
