Since Halloween is coming I thought it might be fun to write about the legendary jackalope. The jackalope is a mythical creature that is said to be a jackrabbit with a pair of antelope antlers originating from North American folklore. However they were also mentioned in medieval folklore in Bavaria and in Central America as a horned rabbit creature. There is even some artwork from ancient Persia with a rabbit with a unicorn like horn. So it may be a relatively universal mythological creature.
In 1932 Douglas Herrick who happened to live in Douglas, Wyoming, USA created the Douglas jackalope . He had studied taxidermy as a teenager and after returning from a jackrabbit hunting trip had the idea to put deer antlers on one jackrabbit's head. Since then many different people have created their own variants of the jackalope. If you haven't seen one in person mounted on the wall at a restaurant I'm sure you've at least seen one of these on television!
For those of you who are true believers in the jackalope and you want to track down your own you can get a hunting tag from the chamber of commerce of Douglas, Wyoming to hunt down your very own jackalope. However there are very tight restrictions, the first being that the open season is only on June 31 each year from midnight until 2 A.M. Additionally you must have an IQ of more than 50 but not to exceed an IQ of 72. So bad news to all of us on Hive because I think all of us have an IQ over 100. And for some reason I can't seem to find June 31st on the calendar either, odd... Apparently thousands of the licenses have been issued.
It is thought that the original legends of the creature come from a papilloma virus infection that infects hares. It causes them to grow horn like tumors at various parts of their bodies. I thought about sharing a picture of one of these poor infected rabbits, but I really didn't want to make anyone sick. It's not a pleasant to look at and made me feel sorry for the poor rabbit.
What inspired me to think about the jackalope you might ask? A long time ago I added this token to my silver collection because it was just really cool! It comes from a casino called Sierra Sid's in Sparks, Nevada, US. Having never been to Sparks I had to look it up on a map and it's adjacent to Reno, Nevada US. Yet another place I've never been. But they did produce this nice Silver Strikers commemorative silver casino chip.

I love collecting these commemorative silver casino chips. I hadn't planned on picking up any new silver until January until I found a cool lot of different ones on eBay and ended up buying them last week. The deal was too good to pass up. I'm sure I'll be sharing some of those when they show up! But I will warn you once you start collecting them you may get hooked like I am.
