Using Ecency Points to Increase Returns on Your Content

in #hive-1679223 years ago

Hey all!

I know it's been quite a while since I posted here, and I just wanted to let you know that I haven't forgotten you! I've just been a little preoccupied with a serial storytelling experience with a "choose your own adventure" aspect called The Hunter's Instinct, which I have undertaken over at the Scholar and Scribe community over at @hive-199275. Scholar and Scribe is an amazingly talented community of writers/authors coming together to showcase and support high quality narrative-driven and creative writing with their own 2nd-layer tokens designed to reward both posters and curators. Check it out, you won't be disappointed!

In this process, I have been experimenting with using different frontends on Hive to see how to best take advantage of each of their unique utilities to help me get my content out there in front of people who might want to see it, and I think I MAY have found the best system to both increase exposure to my content and increase the rewards I receive for the time I spend in creating it. And, as the title suggests, Ecency Points - or EP - play a significant role.

Many of you already know of Ecency. There are many who I've spoken with who both like and dislike many different aspects of the platform, such as the lack of analytics tools like what PeakD has or the lack of a true 2nd-layer token like what LeoFinance has. But what Ecency lacks in utility in these realms, it makes up for in the utility of its EP system and the incredible mobile app they've created! Today, I want to talk about how to use Ecency in partnership with your preferred frontend app to increase the visibility and returns of your content.

Personally, I prefer the QOL tools that PeakD offers to its users. The ability to analyze where interactions are coming from, how your posts are performing, and an at-a-glance analysis of your account is really nice, but the true value exists in the templates tool that they've implemented - in my humble opinion. Others who've used the platform for longer could probably sing more praises, but from a utilitarian perspective, the ability to create templates for your posts that you plan to use over and over again (like I am with my serial novella, or even just setting up the footnotes for my general posts like this one) is a significant quality of life improvement over having to constantly reconstruct these elements every time I go to post something for you beautiful people to read.

However, when I post from PeakD - unless I want to spend 5+ HIVE to promote a post - that content doesn't tend to get a whole lot of attention unless the timing is just right. For a post like this, I'm not too worried about it "performing well". Those who are meant to see it will see it, ultimately. That's when I started looking at Ecency's EP system more carefully. To purchase EP, 1 HBD will get you approximately 500 EP. With that amount of EP, you can run a promotion on a post for about 4 days. During that time, your post is being put in front of people browsing in a number of different communities and topics. Now, it's important to ensure that what you're promoting is interesting and valuable enough to compel a potential reader to actually click on it instead of ignoring it with a huff of annoyance that it interrupted their scrolling momentarily. However, what this does is greatly increases the reach of a post that would normally be limited to just one community space and whoever is following you, and it reduces the perceived "need" for crossposting - which I know that I myself have unfollowed some creators who are habitual crossposters because they clutter up my feed.

Running a promotion for that amount of time with the rewards payout set to 50/50 HP/HBD allows you to potentially recoup the 1 HBD investment you made at the start almost effortlessly! I have a few friends that boost their posts for the same amount of EP instead of promoting them, which allows them to recoup the investment and an additional bit of profit as well. Though this is definitely a slower build, there is less of a gamble with it. A boost will result in a definite return where a promotion could perform very poorly and you lose out on the initial investment.

Additionally, if you use Ecency to conduct your audience engagement, you mint EP for free just by using the platform. This is a more gradual buildup, but you can still generate a ton of points for free just by interacting normally with your audience!

So where does the partnership come into play? Well, for me, I have been using PeakD to compose my posts - fully utilizing the QOL improvements that their templates tool provides me - and then I can either choose to schedule the post from PeakD OR I can then copy-paste the post into the post editor on Ecency and post directly from Ecency. Either way is perfectly acceptable, but the latter of the two will generate approximately 15 EP just for posting from Ecency. Using these tools in symbiotic partnership, I can maximize my efficiency in drafting and publishing content, then promoting the important posts in an effort to increase their visibility and generate greater rewards from them. A personal witness to this strategy is the difference between a post I used EP for and a post I published just using PeakD: EP promotion resulted in a 60.66 HIVE payout and PeakD-exclusive resulted in a 3.42 HIVE payout. I'm happy with both, but those numbers are hard to argue with!

Ultimately, I just hope that people enjoy what I create for them. But, if I can increase my rewards for the time I spend in creating said content, that's obviously a plus too!

So, that's all I have for y'all today. I know this is likely a "no-brainer" kind of thing, but I know that I for one did not realize the true value of Ecency until just recently. I was using it because it was familiar and what I started out with. Now I'm using it with intentional purpose: to promote the content that really matters. Thank you for your time and attention, I hope this was helpful to someone!

I have always loved Ecency, going back to the days it was still Esteem. I find it to be a very easy to use front-end with a great rewards system.

There are some who will downvote boosted posts, mostly the new "@x" accounts like xecency, xappreciator, xocdb, etc. Thankfully they don't have too big of an impact yet.

I agree. It's clean, it's modern, and like I said: their mobile app is hard to beat! Truly is a wonderful frontend, just missing a few features that I really like to use.

Yeah, those accounts are annoying, but I don't believe that they'll really have to great an impact overall. Even so, I would only personally boost a post that wasn't performing very well and could use the extra "oomf" to get it over the dust threshold. After that, there's no point in boosting, imho. I'd rather promote any day, that way the audience that I want to see it ultimately will see it.

I used to boost pretty much everything (2 years of EP before I realized that I could use it, so I just blew through it lol) but now I just boost weak posts as you say to get them out of dust. I boost and promote certain posts like my weekly nft posts just to make sure I at least make back my investment on tokenizing. It seems to be working well so far.

Exactly. I think that is ultimately the purpose. There are those who would game the system, but the tools are there to recoup investments and reward efforts.

B20. Yes, this is a wonderful initiative and good support, especially when things go wrong. as planned)

These are very helpful tips. thank you for that.
I tried promoting an existing post but I do not know how to find the requested permalink.
not sure what is the correct format to place in the "post" field.

Thank you !

So you can actually very easily do this by clicking the three dot menu on any post and selecting "promote" from that drop-down. You'll have the option to choose how long you want to run the promo and everything from the window that pops up. Otherwise, just copy the link to the post like you would if you're sharing it on socials and paste it in that field. !PIZZA

Nice write up. I too like the way you accumulate EP simply for using the platform. I don't take a systematic approach to using it but I do promote posts and it definitely helps reach people. Thanks also for the heads up on Scholar and Scribe; I'll be checking that out.

Absolutely! Scholar and Scribe is a great home for creative writing that is a bit more open to different forms of creative writing than other more established communities. We've found ourselves interestingly niching into serial novellas, but poetry, short stories, and prose all have a home there. So long as it doesn't become a rant space or a place for general blogs, that's all that matters! Storytellers welcome!

Thank you for this, i'm relatively new to ecency myself and am still getting used to the different features, and i'm still trying to figure out if it's more valuable to boost or promote, especially when i don't have many points and can't afford to do both =(

Boosting is only worthwhile to ensure that a post exceeds the dust" threshold of $.02. if a post isn't performing well, use the boost to get an automatic vote from Ecency. Otherwise, you're better off promoting. If the content is high quality and interesting enough, you'll get more impressions and curation from that than a simple boost could give you. That's just my two cents

Ah gotcha, so from what i just googled, the dust threshold is essentially like the threshold where it covers fees?

Yeah, basically. Hive isn't going to waste resources processing all of the tiny fraction of a cent transactions that take place on the network, so the threshold for a payout is set to $.02, otherwise the post collects dust.
