After meeting at an Icelandic school outside Reykjavik, the four members of Kaleo struck up a close friendship and formed the band in 2012, at the age of 17.
The Hawaiian word "Kaleo" means "sound" and based on this concept, the Icelanders decided to start a musical project that would integrate rock, folk and blues rhythms. In 2012, they performed live in their home country for the first time and in 2013 they released their debut album under the band's name. Their songs rose to the top of the music charts, with five songs taking the top spot. In fact, the single "All The Pretty Girls" made them so famous that they caught the attention of the Elektra/Atlantic record label.
Although the band is often confused with North American, frontman JJ Julius Son explained that the band's essence lies in its Scandinavian origins. “Growing up in Iceland connects you with nature. Long and dark times await us. Winter and summer are very special for us. Then you will be able to hear it somehow. It might have something to do with the music,” says Rolling Stone. Another song that captures the spirit of Kaleo is “Way Down We Go.” The song features Julius' vocals as well as a video filmed at the Þríhnúkagígur volcano. "I was there for 22 hours. I went by helicopter. All the equipment had to be assembled and then transported in an elevator. But the best thing was the acoustics.
