Strolling through places we've been to in the past, sometimes helps us reminisce and walk down street after street while smiling either a happy smile or a wry smile for remembering events that might be less pleasant.
A few days ago, while picking up my race pack in Menteng, Central Jakarta, I had the intention of visiting a place I used to frequent. Around 2012-2013, I lived in the Pecenongan area of Central Jakarta, so it was very close to this place. It was called Pasar Baroe.
Pasar Baroe is a landmark from the colonial era. It is the oldest sales centre in the city of Jakarta. So, don't be surprised if you can still find shops that are very old, many of which have been in business for generations.
I used to come here for almost a week at a time, sometimes there was nothing I wanted to buy, I just came here to wash my eyes. Ha ha ha.
Pasar Baroe is located right across the Transjakarta bus stop Pasar Baroe, so, the access to get here is very easy. From the front, you can see a very striking bright yellow bridge, the colour combination between yellow and black is very contrasting but eye cathcing.
From the front, a tall, towering gate reads ‘BATAVIA PASSER BAROE 1820’ which indicates when the place started. Yups... 1820. So, until 2024 the age of Pasar Baroe is 184 years old. How legendary,
I used to find a food vendor in front of the gate, but yesterday when I visited, it was gone. Maybe the seller moved, or did they stop selling?
Once inside, of course, you can see rows of houses and shops that look old, signalling the age of the buildings. Some sell various textiles, musical instruments, abhakan [trinkets for Christmas decorations] and so on. Pasar Baroe certainly has its customers. Evidently, they still survive in the era of the onslaught of online stores in the marketplace. I didn't stay long as it was getting late and I still had a long way to go. Thank you for reading my writing....
Hi, I am the child of the universe, I like to read books with various genres. I was born in the city of batik but can't draw batik yet. I want to be a novelist, but my works are only short poems that are included in anthology books.
