When Covers better than Originals on Three Tune Tuesday

in #hive-193816last year

Good day dear mates! In our world you can often hear many covers on excellent original songs. And sometimes even singers who sang original version confirm that cover turned out more popular or better than original version. And here I'd like to introduce you examples of such cases.

And to begin I'd like from the song Nothing Compares 2 U which associates of course with Sinéad O'Connor who unfortunately died on 23th July 2023 but it was written by Prince. And just 6 years later when this song sang Sinéad O'Connor it turned out more popular than original song.
First of all let's listen original version with Prince. This song he wrote for his side project Family band in 1986.

And now let's compare it with cover version with Sinéad O'Connor.

Just feel this emotions how are they bright and great. It sounds like song has been written for her voice. But Sinéad O'Connor once mentioned that once she had a run-in with Prince over that song and it almost got physical. However, he later admitted that Sinéad's version is better.

Now let's move to another one great song. Which I think every fan of Nirvana knows. At this time I'm talking about song The Man Who Sold The World.
Yes it's also cover. And originally this song of David Bowie. You can find it on his second album which was also called The Man Who Sold The World. But well known Bowie became just after his third album

And now Nirvana version. And here I choose video from Unplugged concert on MTV.

But the most important thing that when you are hearing just intro you can feel that this music of Nirvana from their world, their accords. Seems like Bowie wrote song for them.
I can say it's a sign of great cover when listener doesn't know who originally wrote the song. And this information has the virtue of encyclopedic knowledge.

At this time I want to take you to the France and United Kingdom! First let's listen original version Waterloo Road.

I think from the first notes and chords you'll feel like you've heard something like this somewhere. And you'd be right. The cover of this song brought a lot of fame to a famous French singer - Joe Dassin

But in this case of course we can say that this song can be considered like translation and almost new song not just a cover.

So as a conclusion I can say this part of my compilation includes great hits and authors who now rests it peace but their songs are still with us and will stay in our hurts! And I hope you enjoyed today's music selection, and travelling back to the future without leaving the Hive. 😎 The post goes for #threetunetuesday challenge run by @ablaze.

I was listening to Bowie sing that tune today and love both versions! Great choice of tunes!

Thanks!
By the way I had some thoughts to include Johnny Cash in my compilation, but today Bowie won, maybe in next time I'll put him in my chart too.

You can't beat some Johnny Cash too!

Surely Bowie and Cash both are great!

No way! only Elvis could do that (maybe... but no guarantee) - but Elvis is dead, so... nobody!

Haha their places in history are fermented!

'The Man Who Sold the World' is one of my fave LP-s of Bowie, I grabbed it on ancient cassete (!) back in... 1992? 1995? not sure when exactly - and it had superior fidelity directly from the 70s epoch. I had a great imprinting on that LP, and loved it as much as his more well-known and popular albums.

This seems to be very popular among Bowie fans and on the blog. I am really loving this track too.

I still remember having tapes.. oh when the spiral broke it was a disaster! Haha I also remember once I built my CD collection was stolen I then started building on MP3.

once I built my CD collection was stolen

??? how's that happened?.. can you give me details?..

( I had all my collections still here, doubled with my wife's cassette boxes, haha. (but we got rid off the most part of VHS stuff). And when I moved, I gave my entire shelf of vinyl to one of my friends - and since then I have held back from buying vinyl, despite all the hype, with the exception of three Radiohead deluxe boxes).

Anyway, now days I mostly listen to my mp3 collection. And a funny fact: each year, I find that I rely more and more on Youtube, rather than on my HD folders, lol.

Yes, there was some drug addicts that broke into my house/room and stole it to sell. 😭

I was maintaining an MP3 collection but instead moved toward lists instead and find it better to then use a streaming service. Even so, I find myself using YouTube still often! I still remember introducing my Dad to "the internet" back in the day, and the first thing I showed him how to search songs on YouTube! Haha

😳😳😳 that was refreshing - but totally not in uplifting way... I can imagine this sort of invasion into your space is like a violation :/

Yes it is very bad. I still have the bad memories over 20 years later!

Great post @travoved ! Loved how you talked about famous covers making songs even more popular than the originals. The Sinéad O'Connor cover of "Nothing Compares 2 U" and Nirvana's version of "The Man Who Sold The World" really stood out. Explaining the drama between Sinéad and Prince added a cool touch. Moving to France and the UK, the "Waterloo Road" comparison was neat, especially with Joe Dassin's twist. Your post makes old songs feel fresh, and I'm looking forward to more!

Thank you! I hope to research and find out some more quality covers and songs which will be possible to include in one of my next TTT posts.

Yay! 🤗

Agree 146% about the Sinead O'Connor case, but strongly disagree with Bowie. (That LP is among my fave Bowie works, btw). Jason Crest ... well, maybe its better than original.. but thats not 100% sure. 😜

All.may be. By the way if we had a little bit different points of view on this artists we can try to make podcast and post it on one of next TTT 😉

Podcast... isnt this thing need a videocamera to shoot video?... pair of friends sitting together under said gadget... other friend doing the video-composing... sounds too complicated to me. to !BEER is much easier!

I think it can be just sound version with adding links to music. But still need to highlight many moments to realize it. By the way it maybe be 3speak platform😉
