"I thought you would have forgotten about me," he said.
"I never can," she replied, "We are bonded forever."
He smiled sadly as she rested her head on his shoulder.
For a few moments, they were one. When she woke up, they'd be worlds apart.

For my interpretation, I focused on star-crossed lovers. There's nothing more gut-wrenching than having to continue to live after the love of your life has transitioned, particular if this connection was cut short in your youth. It's almost like living a half life. And so, in this case, the protagonist meets her lover in her dreams. She can never forget him, not for as long as she lives.
