The zoomaster returns with yet another beast. This one is from Hungary, a country we have already visited in the past. However, this time we have a smaller denomination.
A beautiful 5 Forint coin featuring a magnificent creature commonly known as the Great White Egret
And here's a photo of how the animal looks in real life:
Some other common names this magnificent bird goes by are common egret, large egret, and great white egret or great white heron.
Scientifically described as Ardea alba, it is a large, widely distributed species, with the four subspecies occuring in Asia, Africa, the Americas and southern Europe, although in recent years it has also been spreading to more northern areas of the European continent.
These herons get to be up to 1 meter (3.3 feet) tall and 80 to 104 centimeters (31 to 41 inches), with a wingspan of 131 to 170 centimeters (52 to 67 inches). Their weight ranges from 700 to 1,500 g (1.5 to 3.3 pounds). Unlike other birds, females and males look quite similar
They are carnivorous bird with their diet consisting of fish, frogs, insects, crustaceans and other small aquatic animals. They hunt by wading in shallow water and spearing the prey with their sharp bills.
Currently the species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN and is not under immediate threat as a whole, although threat levels differ from area to area.
Anyways, I think I'll stop paraphrasing Wikipedia at this point. Feel free to click here if you want to read more on them :)
Here's a quick video of an individual for your viewing pleasure!
Damn, what a magnificent creature!
Ok, let's talk a bit about the actual coin now.
As aforementioned, this is a 5 Forint coin from Hungary. My piece was minted in 1993. It is a made of 75% Copper, 4% Nickel and 21% Zinc.
These are regular circulation coins and new ones are still minted today.
Other than the bird, the obverse has the minting date and the text
MAGYAR KÖZTÁRSASÁG
For
Republic of Hungary
The reverse is pretty plain, essentially the denomination in huge letters!
As for the edge, which I forgot to take a pic of, is just a smooth surface so you didn't miss much!
And that pretty much concludes today's coin!
All in all, yet another very beautiful animal-themed coin from Hungary! If you want it's really cheap, I guess it goes for face value.
As for me, I have a couple of these coins thanks to a trip I took to the country a while ago!
Ok frens, this is it for today. See you soon with more animal themed coins :)
The Zoo Master is a new series where I showcase my animal themed coins from all around the world. The zoo Master really loves coins with animals :)
