Below her mouth - LGBT... Representation? (Note: the movie is NSFW but my post isn't nor the topic itself) [ENG/ESP]

Hello! This show is quite something to talk about. It's a very graphic LGBT film, I won't be using those images or talking about the explicit scenes so you are safe here.

What I want to talk about is the conflicting thoughts I have about it because I'm all into LGBT representation in movies but this one is a bit too much, but there are straight movies with scenes like this one has and they aren't an issue so, LGBT movies should go for a "good" representation or just have to exist the same way other movies does?

De lo que quiero hablar es de los pensamientos contradictorios que tengo al respecto, porque estoy a favor de la representación LGBT en las películas, pero ésta es un poco demasiado, pero hay películas heterosexuales con escenas como ésta y no son un problema, así que, ¿Las películas LGBT deben buscar una "buena" representación o simplemente tienen que existir de la misma manera que otras películas?

When displaying LGBT characters, there is a heroic expectation around them, the audience expects a good representation that queer people can identify with, but a lot of movies seems to fall into stereotypes or depict queer relationships as volatile, promiscuous, or the result of a bad experience in a straight relationship. When not, the queer character is a friend of the lead, the funny friend, annoying friend, or the excuse to pack in one character all the "inclusion" like gay, disabled, and black.

There is nothing wrong with being any of those things, and bad queer relationships exist but it's unfair that it is like 90% of the content that the queer community often sees.

Cuando se muestran personajes LGBT, hay una expectativa heroica en torno a ellos, el público espera una buena representación con la que las personas queer puedan identificarse, pero muchas películas parecen caer en estereotipos o representar las relaciones queer como volátiles, promiscuas o el resultado de una mala experiencia en una relación heterosexual. Cuando no es así, el personaje queer es un amigo del protagonista, el amigo gracioso, el amigo molesto, o la excusa para meter en un mismo personaje toda la "inclusión" como gay, discapacitado y negro.

No hay nada malo en ser cualquiera de esas cosas, y las malas relaciones queer existen, pero es injusto que sea como el 90% del contenido que la comunidad queer suele ver.

Below her mouth is a Canadian film from 2016 that depicts the story of two women that felt suddenly attracted at the bar, one of them (Jasmine) was about to get married to a man but wasn't completely sure about it, the other one (Dallas) recently got out of a relationship, openly lesbian long time before the timeline of the movie.

Debajo de su boca es una película canadiense de 2016 que retrata la historia de dos mujeres que se sienten atraídas de repente en el bar, una de ellas (Jasmine) estaba a punto de casarse con un hombre pero no estaba completamente segura de ello, la otra (Dallas) acaba de salir de una relación, abiertamente lesbiana mucho antes de la línea de tiempo de la película.

They met outside a club, Jasmine went with a friend but lost her while she was hitting on a girl, Dallas and her had a small talk that at first, I thought they knew each other and were just jokingly pretending not to. But they were strangers that bonded about one about to get married and the other being almost engaged once (she thought about it but last minute decided to buy an apartment for herself and not a ring for her ex). Dallas is flirty, she went for it and Jasmin didn't stop her, they had their first kiss right there. It was an attraction, at first sight, can't say love yet, but they felt that tension that was irresistible.

Se conocieron a la salida de un club, Jasmine fue con una amiga pero la perdió mientras coqueteaba con una chica, Dallas y ella tuvieron una pequeña charla que al principio, pensé que se conocían y que solo estaban bromeando para no hacerlo. Pero eran desconocidas que estrecharon lazos porque una estaba a punto de casarse y la otra estuvo a punto de comprometerse una vez (lo pensó pero en el último momento decidió comprar un apartamento para ella y no un anillo para su ex). Dallas es coqueta, fue a por ello y Jazmín no la detuvo, se dieron su primer beso allí mismo. Fue una atracción, a primera vista, no se puede decir amor todavía, pero sintieron esa tensión que fue irresistible.

Jasmine left the club feeling guilty, she's a faithful woman and that moment of weakness can't happen again she said to her friend that now was with her again. Her fiancé called late and they talked a little bit about the wedding, things are very cold between them.

Jasmine salió del club sintiéndose culpable, es una mujer fiel y ese momento de debilidad no puede volver a ocurrir le dijo a su amiga que ahora estaba con ella de nuevo. Su prometido llamó tarde y hablaron un poco sobre la boda, las cosas están muy frías entre ellos.

Dallas turns out to be a worker in Jasmine's neighbor's house, when they see each other the next morning Dallas asks Jasmine out and she refuses at first but then she agrees, to just one drink, nothing more, but it was inevitable, more happened and they ended up together at Dallas' place, which Jasmine really liked.

Dallas resulta ser una trabajadora en la casa del vecino de Jasmine, cuando se ven a la mañana siguiente Dallas invita a salir a Jasmine y ella se niega al principio pero luego accede, a una sola copa, nada más, pero fue inevitable, pasaron más cosas y terminaron juntos en casa de Dallas, lo cual le gustó mucho a Jasmine.

They share a wild attraction but also a deeper connection, the morning after, they went for a walk, to a park, they talked about their lives, and then is when the connection becomes more like love.

Comparten una atracción salvaje pero también una conexión más profunda, a la mañana siguiente, fueron a dar un paseo, a un parque, hablaron de sus vidas, y entonces es cuando la conexión se convierte en algo más parecido al amor.

At first, it comes very suddenly that Jasmine is into her fiancé and then having an affair with a woman, but looking back, she always liked women, even kissed one as a teenager, but her mother made her stop seeing that girl and repress that part of her, pushing her to find a man with a job and marry him.

Al principio, resulta muy repentino que Jasmine esté metida en su prometido y que tenga una aventura con una mujer, pero mirando hacia atrás, siempre le gustaron las mujeres, incluso besó a una cuando era adolescente, pero su madre le hizo dejar de ver a esa chica y reprimir esa parte de ella, empujándola a encontrar un hombre con trabajo y casarse con él.

Dallas didn't have that story, but the was very manly since a kid, she liked to fix things with her dad and now is a roofer. Her mom was disappointed in her but she didn't care, different from Jasmine who just let her true self out with this strong attraction to Dallas.

Dallas no tenía esa historia, pero era muy varonil desde niña, le gustaba arreglar cosas con su papá y ahora es techadora. Su madre estaba decepcionada de ella pero no le importaba, a diferencia de Jasmine que solo dejó salir su verdadero yo con esta fuerte atracción por Dallas.

They had a very physical day in bed, until the night when Jasmine tells Dallas that she can't stay with her, she needs to continue her life and marry her fiancé. Dallas convinces her to let her in the house and they are together again, a very passionate round in the bathtub, but sadly, or gladly, her fiancé came in and caught the two of them together.

Tuvieron un día muy físico en la cama, hasta la noche en que Jasmine le dice a Dallas que no puede quedarse con ella, que necesita continuar su vida y casarse con su prometido. Dallas la convence de que la deje entrar en la casa y vuelven a estar juntas, una ronda muy apasionada en la bañera, pero lamentablemente, o afortunadamente, su prometido entró y las atrapó.

The engagement didn't break there, Jasmine asks her fiancé to forgive her and he agrees but if she finishes it in person which she does, not without tears from both girls. But she couldn't stay with her fiancé anymore, she never felt completely happy, emotionally talking, and now her body knows what it truly likes and it's just impossible to pretend that she can be with him now. She tries, they tried to make it work but it just didn't, she even cried about it.

El compromiso no se rompió ahí, Jasmine le pide a su prometido que la perdone y él acepta pero si lo termina en persona lo cual hace, no sin lágrimas de ambas chicas. Pero ya no podía seguir con su prometido, nunca se sintió completamente feliz, emocionalmente hablando, y ahora su cuerpo sabe lo que realmente le gusta y es imposible pretender que pueda estar con él ahora. Ella lo intenta, intentan que funcione pero simplemente no es así, incluso llora por ello.

The engagement ends, and Jasmine goes to Dallas. We know they are going to try a relationship, Jasmine tells Dallas that she talked about her with her friends, it let us know that she came out to them.

El compromiso termina y Jasmine se va con Dallas. Sabemos que van a intentar una relación, Jasmine le dice a Dallas que habló de ella con sus amigos, nos hizo saber que salió del armario con ellos.

After seeing the movie and some interviews, I know they wanted to show the passion of love at first sight when you can't help but try, see what happens. They both had troubles with previous relationships and that's quite normal for the queer community, even more, if they know they like a different gender than socially they are supposed to, but are forced into ignoring that reality and have straight relationships.

Después de ver la película y algunas entrevistas, sé que querían mostrar la pasión del amor a primera vista cuando no puedes evitar intentarlo, a ver qué pasa. Ambas tuvieron problemas con relaciones anteriores y eso es bastante normal para la comunidad queer, más aún, si saben que les gusta un género diferente al que socialmente se supone, pero se ven obligadas a ignorar esa realidad y tener relaciones heterosexuales.

For that part, I like it, it shows the passion between two women and the actresses had really good chemistry, on the sexy part, it's very explicit, you see everything, but it's not gross and exaggerated, and we can see a tender part too.

Por esa parte, me gusta, muestra la pasión entre dos mujeres y las actrices tenían muy buena química, en la parte sexy, es muy explícito, se ve todo, pero no es burdo y exagerado, y podemos ver una parte tierna también.

Their relationship was beautiful, they weren't unhealthy for each other, it starts with just the physical part but it evolves into caring, wanting to know, missing each other when apart. Everything goes very fast but it could happen so it's great to see it between two women.

Su relación era preciosa, no eran malas la una para la otra, empiezan sólo con la parte física pero evolucionan hacia el cariño, el querer conocerse, el echarse de menos cuando están separadas. Todo va muy rápido pero podía pasar así que es genial verlo entre dos mujeres.

After decades of LGBT characters being beaten, betrayed, and ended with a sad destiny, it's good to see this happy ending.

Después de décadas en las que los personajes LGBT eran golpeados, traicionados y terminaban con un triste destino, es bueno ver este final feliz.

But there is still the stereotype of queer people not being faithful, I don't know if other people see it that way, but I didn't like that after having such a big affair, Jasmine wanted to continue her relationship like nothing happened, if her fiancé didn't catch her, she would keep it a secret, not being honest with him and herself.

Pero sigue existiendo el estereotipo de que las personas homosexuales no son fieles, no sé si otras personas lo ven así, pero no me gustó que después de tener una aventura tan grande, Jasmine quisiera continuar su relación como si nada hubiera pasado, si su prometido no la atrapaba, lo mantendría en secreto, no siendo honesta con él ni con ella misma.

I think about the years they were together, and how easily she cheated in one night, and if it had happened with a guy, I won't sympathize, so why should I do it just because it's a girl? And it wasn't an event at the moment they met, where the heat could take her without time to think, it was after she had time to think, in the morning, then she had the time to think again, while at work, and even at the date, she decides to leave first but then decides to go with it.

Pienso en los años que estuvieron juntos, y en la facilidad con la que engañó en una noche, y si hubiera pasado con un chico, no simpatizaría, así que ¿Por qué debería hacerlo sólo porque es una chica? This movie certainly provides visualization, like lesbian couples exist and are worth creating a movie around them. But in terms of representation, is not a movie to identify with as a role model, which is often how every inclusive character is evaluated. For its heavy sexual content, it gives a lot to the morbidity that already surrounds lesbian relationships, which goes against what it was trying to do, taking the lesbian relationships out of the category of male fantasies.

Esta película sin duda proporciona la visualización, como las parejas de lesbianas existen y vale la pena crear una película en torno a ellas. Pero en términos de representación, no es una película con la que identificarse como modelo a seguir, que es a menudo como se evalúa todo personaje inclusivo. Por su fuerte contenido sexual, aporta mucho al morbo que ya rodea a las relaciones lésbicas, lo que va en contra de lo que pretendía, sacar las relaciones lésbicas de la categoría de fantasías masculinas.

So there it is, positive and negative representation in the same movie, but a story made from the women and only the women's point of view, which makes it one of the first movies of its kind.
