So my dictionary tells me that a hobby is anything or activity you enjoy doing in your free time. On a lighter note, I begin to wonder if sleeping or eating can qualify as a hobby, because truth be told they are two activities I enjoy doing, lol. Moreover, I know some people get paid for tasting foods. How I wish.... , never mind.
As defined, hobbies are those things that gives us joy when we find ourselves doing them. They are those things we always want to do as long as we have the time. Most times we don't necessarily get paid to do them. while sometimes, perhaps on few occasions, we get paid doing them. Imagine getting paid for having fun.
Statistics shows that the average person have more than one hobby. It's normal for people to have up to five or even more. Me for one have about four hobbies I greatly enjoying engaging in. I also read somewhere that people who have 1 or more hobbies tend to live a much happier and healthier life than those who don't. From my interactions and study of people close to me, I kind of believe this.
I have many hobbies, all of which I thoroughly enjoy engaging in whenever I find time for them. The thing is, some of this hobbies are in a way rather dormant, while some others are really active. Maybe because this active ones kind of rewards me, one way or the other, for engaging in them.
Growing up, I Loved playing table tennis. It was one sport I was actively involved in . I actually represented my school in SMC games while in secondary school and my department in interdepartmental games, while in university.
I won many laurels while playing but somehow I didn't see it necessary to take it to a professional level. I guess if I had an adviser I would still be playing actively now and who knows I might be earning a fortune playing the game I love playing. Unfortunately this is one hobby that has been dormant for me.
Right from when I was a kid, I have always enjoyed writing. One of my best form of test in the English language, as a subject in primary school, used to be dictation. I was quite good at it. My fascination with words and their spellings grew from there. I was always thrilled how I could put different words together to form a story. From that time, my love for writing grew into a never ending hobby.
Though I have a very tight schedule, writing has always been one active hobby for me. I still and will always find myself engaging in it. The fun part is I get some form of reward for doing this.
Apart from the fun of writing my stories on hive, when I can create the time, I also write books to self publish on some platforms. As we all know, we all make some money writing on hive. I also make reasonable sum of money on my published books on this other platforms. Suffice to say, I make money doing something I would have done for free and still be happy.
As a guy, I have this strange love for cooking. I was closest to mum in the kitchen growing up . That perhaps explains why. With time, as I grew older, it became a part of me and became a hobby. This is one hobby I don't joke with as it is a daily thing for me now.
Though not a full fledged means of making money for me, I do make money from cooking sparingly. I remember recently making snacks for a friend's get together party, and also cooking Jollof rice for a sick relative.
On both occasion I was payed, not that I requested for it though. I have had some other decent pay too from this hobby.
Maybe one day I will go all out and own a proper food business or go fully into writing blogs and publishing books, as I see a path on those roads. I believe they are things I could easily scale up. They say once the passion is there, the will to do will always be found.
For now they are more like active hobbies for me. The money I make from them is but a big plus and great motivation to not stop.
