A leader gets applauded for leading a successful journey with his companions and subordinates. He is a leader too who gets criticism for wrong decisions and failure. Same as this, if we commend teachers for the outstanding performance of their students then shouldn’t teachers be held accountable for the failure of their students?
Almost 7 years ago, an inspection team paid a visit to our college. They were checking pedagogical methods and the environment. All the teachers were highly efficient. When they visited our class, they asked the student about their studies. A class teacher introduced me along with my two mates as shining students to whom the head of that team replied that it is not a flex to have two or three shining students in a class of 30. This shows that these students are capable. Your pedagogy is not good enough to make them capable who are not. And this gave me a different perspective to think about after.
First of all, we must understand the difference between a teacher and a tutor. Teaching is a formation of a sacred bond between student and teacher in which the teacher serves as a lighthouse for the student and guides him in every path. Teacher prepares his student to encounter every difficult situation in life. He doesn’t teach books only but guides as well. A tutor is assigned to teach you your books. He will be concerned with your education only and his task will be to teach you books and deliver you lectures. Teaching is dedication to pupils while tutorship is professionalism.
In older ages, the concept of the teacher was not like this is today. Today, teaching is a profession of earning money. Tutors are not concerned about students. Indeed, making money is the only concern. Teaching at an early age was beyond the concept of money. People used to contact teachers themselves and offer them what they could. But today tuition fees are fixed first. Throughout my education journey, I came across many teachers and tutors in the name of teachers. The difference one can easily notice between them.
You can see colleges and academies cashing the success of their brilliant students by posting them and using them as their ambassadors. This helps them lure a lot of students towards them. This is how education has become business. But they don’t tell about their passing ratio. They don’t tell about students who failed. This discrimination between students for their gain is wrong. If they own shining students then those who failed are their also.
Teachers must understand the feelings of students. He must be well aware of the mental intellect of his students. He must always be eager to work on the shortcomings of his weak students. He must be attentive and compassionate. He must concentrate on all of his students rather than focusing on a few students only. He must ignite the urge to work hard with his students. Along with curricular education, he must work on their personality development as well.
It might be controversial and many will not agree with me but I believe that if success is by teachers then there lies some faults in them as well in the failure of their students. Teachers play a very constructive role in society. They form a main pillar of the nation. They are nationmaker and the progress of the nation depends on them. We have witnessed in history how some great scholars produced some great personalities. There is a dearth of genuine, capable, and dedicated teachers. Teachers must identify their role and should contribute their best services to the country.
